This was everything I had imagined it would be - and more.
We bought our tickets online before we left the UK and this meant we could "skip-the-line". So basically we went straight through to the security check point rather than waiting in a queue for over and hour.
We opted to have the audio guide which was really helpful and informative - you could chose where to explore and go round the Colosseum in your own time and the audio guide was easy to use.
Nothing could quite prepare you for stepping out into the main auditorium of this vast arena - you could almost hear the cheer of the crowds and the roars of the Gladiators.
We spent a good couple of hours exploring, but you can spend a much or a little time here are you wish. The views out from the Colosseum are also as beautiful and breathtaking as the views inside.

Great place. We all loved it. Go on a guided tour to make the most of it. It only costs 5 euros per adult (free for children) if you buy it from the Colosseum itself. Made queueing system and a bit of a free for all. If you want a guided tour you can skip round the queue and got straight to the end windows in the ticket office. You could also go to the Forum first as this saves you queueing as 1 ticket gets you into both. Make sure you take water as there are lots of stairs.

When the ruins are so mesmerizing and beautiful, imagine how would it have been when it was thronged by thousands of Romans to see the gladiators fighting in the earlier time. The Colosseum has an aura of its own. Its grandeur keeps you hooked and you could look at it for minutes together.
