We booked an underground chambers tour using viator. Unfortunately, we could not see the underground sites because it flooded that morning. In addition, we were 2 minutes late to our tour and the tour left without us (completely understandable, but I thought we could catch up with them if it was only 2 minutes...I have a feeling they left earlier). We were on standby for almost 2 hours to see if we could squeeze into another tour. We got super lucky because we were able to!
Our tour guide (either Emily or Amelia?) was super nice and knowledgeable about the Colesseum and Palatine Hill. We really enjoyed her as a tour guide and I wish we had smaller bills to tip her! There was a marathon going on right in front of the entrance of the Colosseum and she literally guided people through the runners. Overall, the Colesseum was an amazing experience and the sites of Palatine Hill were breath taking. it was one of my favorite parts of my trip to Italy!

Going to Rome? Can't miss this stop, but do yourself two favors - buy tickets online direct in advance and go to the bathroom before entering.

I suppose when one is in Rome the obvious thing to do is visit the Forum and the Colosseum. Pro tip - BOOK A TOUR!! For starters you get to skip the lines (dear God, the lines!!). Secondly, you get a ton of information you never knew you never knew about the foundations of the building, its construction, what took place in there .... etc. Fascinating altogether. Also, bring water as once you are inside the gates (especially if it is a hot day) you can't get your hands on any. ALSO also ... stairs is a thing here along with very uneven surfaces ... so consider this if you will be visiting with young children or the elderly. An elevator is available if need be but it only goes to the second floor, not higher.

We took the combined guided tour Underground and to the Upper Levels by purchasing tickets at the ticket office.
We had tried to buy tickets on line, but the advance tickets were all sold out. So we got to the ticket line at 8:00, the gates opened at 8:30, and we only had a short line. We bought our admission tickets at one of the main windows, and learned that the guided tour tickets were sold at a separate ticket window (#11 I believe). It was worth it. Having a guide really added to depth to our appreciation of this marvel. It was amazing to see up close the construction from the year 70AD, and appreciate all the different ways the building was used. We also downloaded the Rick Steves audio tour app to our cell phone and used that for further background information. the colorful commentary from the guide and the Rick Steeves app made for a great 1/2 day experience.

This is a must see. We took a small elite which was more than worth the money. Pick up from our hotel and only 4 in our group. Skip the line into the Colosseum a big advantage. We did the the forum which is huge and the city. A lot of walking 3.5hrs and our guide was so informative. So many photos taken and the history is amazing. Loved every minute of it

Worth every penny.

When you enter you can't but be in awe, to think this was built @ the time of Christ and we know what went on for entertainment purposes and the thousands of people who lost their lives. but that aside it is just a fantastic structure and all credit to the men and women that built it. A must see if you travel to rome, but book your tickets online for half the price you would pay in rome, and skip the que, enjoy, Michael.

They are building a new Metro station almost next to the Colosseum so it distracted from the history and ambience somewhat, railings and fences.
Bit worrying they can build so close to such a building, hopefully it will have no effect, not sure it's foundations would meet current building regs.
It was pretty busy when we visited which i suspect is normal but you could still get tickets, there are different entrances and different types of tickets.

We paid 35 pounds for a small group guided tour. For this you went round the colleseum, Palatine hill and the Roman Forum and skipped the queues. It was well worth it as you learnt a lot as you went round and they gave you headphones so you could all hear what they said. I took lots of photos, it was really good.
