I signed up to do an early morning walking tour and was so glad I did. It was impressive and I learned so much from the guide. I enjoyed the 4 hour tour.

Get there early and wait in line. Ignore all the people outside the Coliseum selling skip the line tickets and tours because you can buy your ticket and pay for a guided tour for an additional 5 Euro directly at the ticket office inside the Coliseum. We almost paid 35 Euro per person for skip-the-line guided tour, which included admission to the Forum and Palatino when we were outside the Coliseum. Glad we waited in line to go to the Coliseum box office for about 15-20 minutes because we got basically the same thing for 19 Euro each.

It's crazy to think that the Coliseum is over 2,000 years old and 400,000 poor souls and about a million animals were all killed inside it during its almost 500 years of use!

What can you say? It's the Colosseum. Some advice here, buy the skip the line pass as the line can be an hour long at times. On out tour we skipped the line while others stood out in the rain waiting to get in. The Romans definitely knew how to build a stadium.

Definitely a must see. We did not buy tickets ahead of time and we went on a Friday morning and got there as soon as it opened. Recommend going to the ticket booth at the Forum first. We bought our tickets there and there was no line. We then walked to the Colosseum and entered there and didn't wait in line at all. Schedule a lot of time to visit these two places. The colosseum is great but we LOVED the forum.

The colosseum is a must visit, we went with a tour guide which also included the palisitine hill and forum. We were only given an hour at the colosseum which we found limited us to not being able to look around the whole place. We said we would definitely go again but not with a tour guide as he often read from a book and there was a new part that had been opened up with the university doing there own pop up museum of facts and figures inside which we were unable to stop and take it all in, we were then taken into the forum and did this in an hour with the guide where we said we could stay for as long as we wanted but would be without a tour, we would of done this but we had left a few things at the tour guides shop as some items are not allowed into the colosseum so is best to not take with you. So we went back to get our items in fear that they might have been thrown away if we did not collect at the end of a tour.
If you are to go I would go for a tour with just the colosseum where you are then able to look around yourself once they have shared with your their knowledge

This is probably the best starting point for visiting ancient Rome. A tour to include the arena underground and the 5th level balcony, along with skipping the line to enter is the way to go. I went with the tour through the official ticket office - Coopculture.it, you can reserve & pay online and you can also call directly with any questions. It's a guided tour of the colosseum only but you get underground and upper level access that isn't available to general public. Also includes entrance to the Forum & Palatine Hill. It is less expensive than the private company tours but I've heard it fills up quickly and availability is harder especially in high season.

Download the Rick Steves Audio Europe app for a good audio tour of the Forum. If you're tired, you can find a good seat in the middle of the Forum, listen to the app and pretty much follow all the sites from that location.

A couple of free & worthwhile things to walk to while in the area would be (1) Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses in San Pietro in Vincoli, a small church about 5 min walk north of the colosseum; and (2) Bocca della Verita, the Mouth of Truth sculpture, made famous in the movie Roman Holiday, about 10 min walk SW of the colosseum. If you go to the Mouth of Truth, you will then be right next to the Jewish Ghetto which is a great place to find something to eat - you have to try the fried artichokes!

When in Rome. A must visit but be prepared for lots of people and queuing if you havent already bought a ticket. We bought an audio tour to help us understand what we were looking at. Buy a SUPER pass at the Paladine for 18€ before you get to the coloseum to avoid the ticket buying crowd and go straight in. You don't need an audio tour phone for each person as they are on loudspeaker so save yourself a few euros there as well. The SUPER pass also gives ypu access to the Paladine which we actually enjoyed more. Recommended time at the coloseum 2 hours.
