This place is amazing, right in the middle of a city ! Make sure you get Skip the Line passes or you will queue for hours....what's the point !!

When in Rome. A must visit but be prepared for lots of people and queuing if you havent already bought a ticket. We bought an audio tour to help us understand what we were looking at. Buy a SUPER pass at the Paladine for 18€ before you get to the coloseum to avoid the ticket buying crowd and go straight in. You don't need an audio tour phone for each person as they are on loudspeaker so save yourself a few euros there as well. The SUPER pass also gives ypu access to the Paladine which we actually enjoyed more. Recommended time at the coloseum 2 hours.

The Colosseum is best reached by Metro from Termini Station, as it is only a few meters from the station exit.
Booking in advance is definitely an asset as it lets you skip the queues, (which in November were about 300 people long)

The building dwarfs everything both in size and scale, picture a modern sporting arena, where up to 80000 people could enter and leave in only 20 minutes and all were accommodated in tiered seating with a view. Where the arena floor could be flooded to re-enact sea battles, where a system of lifts and pulleys could raise elephants and wild animals from the vaults below. Yet this was built some 2000 years ago.

Starting with those facts and walking around, it is a wondrous feat of construction and very difficult to imagine the methods used, and the labor involved.

However the purpose of the arena should not be forgotten, as a place of spectacular shows, and regretfully slaughter for the masses, through all sorts on macabre methods.

Don’t miss this spectacle, take a guided tour, it is worth it, allow a minimum of 2/3 hours here.

Will try not to be repetitive, instead I offer a few tips:

Go on a weekday. Weekends are much busier!

There are no bathrooms outside the Colosseum so make sure you go before you arrive there.

Buy your ticket either at the Palatine entrance (down the Via San Gregario from the Colosseum) or from the entrance on the Via Fora Imperialle, NOT from the Colosseum entrance. The lines are shortest at the Palatine. The ticket can then be used to visit the Colosseum.

Once you bought your ticket at the Forum or Palatine then go to the Colosseum (Ignore the pushy touts with vests and ID badges who will offer to cut the line for you and sell you tours.) The line for "open tickets" is typically the center lane.

Get in line, go through security, and Enjoy!

Our tour was an adult family private tour with Dario Bartoli as tour guide in November of this year. Dario was fun, educational, personable and in every way the best! We took many tours on this trip to Rome and he was exceptional. The tour is 4 hours and involves walking and stairs, but none of us had a problem with it. Dario kept everything interesting with answers to questions (and we had a lot) and extra information. After the tour he recommended local eating places and less known places to visit that proved to be also interesting and fun. Thank you Dario and Trip Advisor for getting us together!

This is one of the most unbelievable architectural creations in the world, it is a must see when in Rome, the history and size of the structure is something you can only appreciate when standing on the site. Fantastic.

This was a very interesting site that is full of history. We paid for a tour to skip the general admission line and have a guide for the colosseum and forum. This is a must see in a trip to Rome for sure!

The Colosseum is an absolutely amazing site! It's probably the coolest thing I did in Rome. It's worth taking a guided tour with one of the local companies. Our tour guide was able to explain in captivating detail the events that took place during the pinnacle of Roman rule at the Colosseum. The history here is astounding and will always remain a cherrished memory.

We had such a great experience with Maya Tours during our stay in Rome we used them for our colosseum tour also since we had such a great experience with The Vatican tour. The are easy to book with online or you can just go to one of their offices. You won’t be disappointed
