The buliding contains the original doors to the Forum over two thousand years old.
The interior of the church is breath taking - the ceiling is an amazing work of art as are the line of staues of all the saints that leads to the main alter.
You can visit the garden that was completed by Pope Leo XIII - his tomb is contained in the church to the left of the main alter.
Many people do not know that this is the Popes own church as he is also the Bishop of Rome - St Peters is the main church of the Vatican.
Over the road from San Giovanni are the 'Steps of Christ' - the very ones that he climbed to be judged by Pilot - very special place, you can only climb these steps on your knees, try and arrive early as the place is always packed.
The doors of the Forum are at the rear of the church - massive and impressive - as is the entire complex of the Church - its a must see on your trip to Rome.

The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is the Bishop of Rome's (Pope Francis) Seat. This normal size church located in the midst of busy Rome is amazingly beautiful. We used the audio guide which opened us to the wonderful art history of this building. The giant sized marble statues of the Apostles surrounding the central part of the church are works of art to behold. So much history, so much art!

We used the Omnia card audio guide services which brought it to life. A shame you had to pay extra for the cloisters (which we did not).

Everyone goes to St Peters but if in Rome make sure you get to Saint Johns in Laterano. It is right off the Red line metro and is well worth the visit. You will find a grand church with fewer visitors and a much more peaceful experience in a palatial atmosphere.

The rain subsided as we headed for the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, one of the largest in Roma. This is a beautiful church, filled with ornate decorations and many religious artifacts. We learned about the jubilee years which happen every 25 years and saw the lovely doors that are only opened for this occasion. Next one happens in 2015.
