“Don't miss this basilica”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

Having been to Rome four times I have done the big sights before, but somehow missed this one. It is monumental inside and outside. Very muched enjoyed the bronze doors from the Curia in the Roman Forum as well as the breathtaking sparkling mosaics inside.

“Awe-Inspiring Experience”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

I was actually traveling with friends and left them to see a couple places that I'd already been to in order to see San Giovanni in Laterano. The exterior of the building is nice but nothing special, certainly not in Rome.

However, once you go inside everything changes. I was lucky to be there when it wasn't crowded (maybe a couple dozen people), and just sat alone in the large hall and looked around. To me the experience was awe-inspiring. Everything in this church is a work of art, the hall is huge and there is so much to look at. I sat there for about half an hour and didn't want to leave.

Basically imagine St. Peter's Basilica, only with more statues, no noise, a lot less people, and places to sit. You can imagine how even for a non-religious non-Christian like myself, the experience was amazing.

“Suddenly you feel a presence!”

My first introduction of "monumental" statues of Rome and the inspiration they must have imparted to the believers as they made their pilgrimage to Rome.

“One of the Pope's Churches”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Rome is filled with churches, and it's mind-boggling...just walk into any random one you pass and you'll find artistic miracles within. St.John Lateran is one of the largest and most important...and one of the most beautiful. Don't miss the baptistry in an adjacent building.
