“for good food in a splendid environment!”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

We wanted to eat at Fraterna Domus as we had read such good reviews on tripadvisor! when we got there for lunch around 12.40 pm, the dining room was deserted and we were their first customers...we wondered, as it was so quiet. they gave us some house wine and bread to get started..At 1.00 pm the locals started trooping in, the young, the elderly, single men and women, a group celebrating an anniversary, and many more! It suddenly became very noisy and we enjoyed the company! then the food started coming onto the table, first the pasta, followed by delicious roast pork and sausage, with green beans and spinach on the side, followed by green salad, followed by fresh fruit, followed by desert..we were full to the brim with the food, the company, the atmosphere, and the price was bearable, 15 euros per head but extra for the wine..

What a find! Had a great experience here. The room was basic yet super clean. Small room but adequate for me and my husband. The included breakfast was typical Italian style with crusty bread, cheese, coffee. They also served fruits and crackers. I wasn't able to make it to dinner but we were able to join them for lunch and it was superb! We were stuffed! When we went for lunch, the dining room was pretty full of local italians. The food was definitely worth €15. Because of its location, we were able to walk to everywhere. The only drawback was the lack of Internet connection. The sisters were very hospitable and even gave us directions and advice on where to go. We are definitely staying here again next time we visit Rome! ( tried to book a few more nights before we head home this time but they are already booked)

I learned about Fraterna Domus from the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide on Italy. It was on the list of restaurants in the Piazza Navona area, not on the hotel list. After my family and I finished our visit to the magnificent square on a beautiful sunny summer day we felt hungry and consulted the guide book for some places to eat. Fraterna Domus was right around the corner and easy to find. The guide noted that they take cash only and suggested making reservations. Although it was late for lunch, they let us in. It was probably sister Milena who greeted us, since she spoke English. When I inquired about menu and pricing she told me not to worry. The dining hall was spacious, a couple of other guests at that time of the day were having lunch. The menu is set and probably varies from day to day. We started off with a couple of pasta dishes, lasagna and spaghetti. They were home made and delicious. A platter of grilled meats and vegetables with fresh salad and bread followed. It was more than we could eat. For dessert we had a lot of fresh fruits and the best part was home made hazelnut ice cream. Milena made it herself and when I think about it, my mouth begins to water. It was to die for. In the end we payed 15 euros per person and were delighted with the service and the overall experience. I wish I new about this place earlier and stayed here. Very good location.

My husband and I stayed five nights here and we absolutely loved it. We stayed three different places in Italy, and this one was our favorite. From the Termini train station, you can take bus #70 and it drops you right in front of the convent. The nuns are very kind here. Only one speaks English, but they were quick to get her for us if we needed something. She spoke English very well and was always willing to take a few minutes and help us out.
Since it is a convent, we had two twin beds instead of a double bed. Not a big deal. There was also a curfew of 11pm. This is lifted on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. If you ask, they will give you a key to let you in on those nights.
The best thing about this convent is it is within easy (we are 26) walking distance of the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona (love the Christmas market there!). There were many restaurants also in walking distance. You can take bus #87 to the Colosseum. We bought a Roma Pass to use the bus system and get into the Colosseum. You might want to look into it.
Breakfast was provided. It was mostly packaged snacks and hard rolls. If you were quick, when they brought out the tray of rolls there was usually one danish and two croissants. I was able to snag those some days. There was also whole fruit, oranges and I think apples. They provide coffee, tea and milk. My husband and I do not like any of those, so we asked for water. They brought us hot water on the first day. From then on, we just brought our own water down with us.
We did eat dinner there Christmas night so we did not have to worry about finding a place. It is 15 euros and we thought it was very good. We were stuffed. The appetizer (first course?) was pasta, which is standard in Italy. The second course was pork and roast beef with french fries. Then they brought out whole fruit. Finally, they brought a tray with little pastries and we got to pick several we wanted. They had wine for an extra charge.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone interested in finding a basic, clean hotel in Rome, as long as you do not mind the curfew. We loved it.

Room Tip: We were in #17, which is up a lot of stairs. If that is a problem for you, you can ask for a room wi...

My friend and I were delighted to find Fraterna Domus even better situated at the historic heart of Rome than we had dared hope, a big plus for two older women! The nuns were kind and very helpful, phoning for a taxi to take us to the station on a wet morning, and they create a lovely atmosphere. The place was well cared for and our bathroom looked modern and recent - an excellent shower! The only snag was that our room was up lots of stairs - and then down yet more! Older guests might like to check the location of their room - don't go for number 9!! But that's a small point - and a member of staff did help us with our cases when we arrived. We had a great stay in the heart of Rome at an amazing bargain price. I hope to take other friends there next year.

We had a very enjoyable stay here. The sisters were welcoming and very pleasant, and we had a large, clean room. The bathroom was one of those "no shower curtain" ones, which some people seem to find awkward but is actually very practical. There was no WiFi in the room, and the WiFi in the lobby was hit and miss, but this is a converted convent and not high tech!

The buffet breakfasts were good, and we often had dinner here as well, as it was simple, nourishing, and a nice change from the usual restaurant fare.

Our room overlooked the main street and was noisy the first night, but fine with the window closed.

Be sure to check out their beautiful chapel, complete with an elaborately painted ceiling.

This place is in a great location in one of the oldest parts of Rome. The little side streets are medieval, and one can walk to St. Peter's, Piazza Navonna, the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, etc.

As two older guys travelling together, we were a bit apprehensive about staying here, but the sisters could not have been more hospitable, and our stay at Fraterna Domus was one of the highlights of our visit to Rome.

The place is vermante beautiful, the rooms are very large, with 3-4 beds per room, and the bathroom is very spacious with shower, sink, toilet and bidet.
There is a beautiful green park outside.
Great breakfast, lunch or dinner, depending on the treatment, which are plentiful.
Great for those who want to enjoy a week of peace, relaxation is quiet.
