Owner description: Pope Innocenzo X commissioned Gianlorenzo Bernini in 1651 to create this monumental fountain, which would adorn the piazza in front of the family palace.
Reviewed June 10, 2013

Our guidebook discounted the tale of Bernini sculpting this fountain with a look of horror on one figure looking at his rival, Boromini's church, fearing that it would fall on him. The argument wasn't convincing to me, so who really knows? But Bernini's work is a real masterpiece, and it's worth seeing. Weather was the worst of the whole trip, so we didn't get to explore much of the rest of the Piazza Navona, but it looked really charming, as did the surrounding neighborhood. And, weather or not, it's not nearly as crowded as the Trevi, so don't miss it.

Not as many tourists as the Trevi Fountain so you can get right up close. The Egyptian obelisk is the centerpiece, surrounded by the 4 river gods. Fantastic atmosphere in Piazza Navona too, a good place to stop for an ice-cream with the buzz of visitors around you!

Undoubtedly a beautiful fountain in an attractive piazza; worth some time for appreciation. Just beware that the cafés in the square are as expensive as any in Rome; we managed to pay €7.50 for an expresso. A short walk outside the piazza will save a lot of money.

This is probably the best piazza in Rome. 3 amazing fountains, with the Fountain of 4 Rivers being the main attraction. It doesn't get as crowded as Trevi and it lets you enjoy a calmer walk round. Lots of artists selling their work. A bit like Montmartre but not as manic. A must see.

Some Spanish tourists recently were arrested for taking a little dip in this, one of Rome's most magnificent fountains. A project that helped restore Bernini to the good graces of Pope Innocent X, who was then favoring Bernini's rival, Borromini, the fountain is a powerful example of his genius as a sculptor. It's named after great rivers representing four continents: the Nile, the Ganges, the Rio de la Plata, and the Danube. Since the fountain is usually surrounded by crowds of tourists visiting PIazza Navona, you might want to go early in the day and hope that everyone else is still having breakfast.
