After researching the different tour companies and reading horrible reviews for all of them, we decided to go for the Rome Open tour (green buses) because as the agent explained to us, they're the only ones that run a bit later, I believe it was until 11pm.

We read that doing a night tour of Rome was a must, and we glad we did it!!! We did the 24 hour hop on hop off and really enjoyed the experience!!! The city does look beautiful with the attractions and the lights on. Yes, there's lot of traffic in Rome so you may have to wait a bit longer for the bus some times, but I think that's with any bus. We did have some audio troubles at one seat, but we just moved to another one and it worked fine. The descriptions of each site were good and basic, just what we needed. It gives you a good OVERALL tour of most sites in Rome (except the ones where you can't easily access by bus like Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps, etc)

However, it was great to be able to get off at Colosseum, Trastevere, etc and hop on again when we were tired after a few hours of walking...If you have time to relax in Rome, I'd suggest doing this first and then spending more time at each attraction. We actually did the full loop a few times (one during daytime, one at night time and just in between different sites) and enjoyed them

I'd definitely recommend it!

The travel guides for Rome say to not take the first bus offer you receive, and they are most correct. However, this did not stop my father, who is an experienced traveler from taking the first bus offer that walked up to him. So fifty euro later (two tickets), we're on an oversold bus that keeps stopping to pick up MORE PEOPLE. At one point, I think they had oversold the number of seats by double, and then the driver had the nerve to chastise people for trying to stand up in the second level of the bus, instead of the first level sauna. That's right, 80 degrees outside and the bus is not air conditioned. You can open tiny windows and let in the diesel exhaust if you want some air.

The tour company skipped about 1/3 of their advertised stops, and left out many of what I thought would be popular ones, for example, no stop near Trevi fountain or the Pantheon.

Every other tour bus operation has a cover for their second level, but not open tours. When the rain comes, buy a five euro poncho or mini umbrella from one of the many junk sellers that roam around.

After purchasing tickets from an agent we were escorted to another stop and had to wait for 2 hours. Only then we overheard the agent say buses were not coming and then suddenly when we asked for refund they couldn't speak English.

After taking a taxi to the Vatican and having a pleasant day there did we come out to see one of there buses arriving. Failing to get a refund we mistakenly decided to use the tickets to do the tour.

When we got on the audio was broken on both bottom and top floors. That was out experience, unpleasant and a mistake, good luck if you decide to use this so called service.

We unforunately did not research our choices and went with Open Tours. Waited 30-40 minutes, buses were packed, audio did not work in one seat and did not work at all on another bus. Rude attendents and we opted for the boat tour which only only running every hour that day.

Stops not well posted, where to go for the boat not posted and if stairs are an issue for you, you may not want to go on the boat portion at all!

Overall extremely frustrated when buses from other tour companies came twice in the time it took our bus to come once!

Having used various HoHo's around the world we weren't particulary planning on using Romes offerings (there are several to choose from) so hadn't done any prior research into who to use/avoid. We ended up getting the bus after a long day on our feet it was after 1900hrs and couldn't face walking anymore.

We pretty much got the first bus that arrived. I'll say from the start that Rome isn't particualry suited to HoHo buses like other cities. The traffic is crazy busy until later in the evening so doing the 'loop' can take a ridiculous amount of time (not the companies fault) the bus also seemed double back on itself allot probably due to the road lay out? Many of Romes streets are too narrow for the buses so you'd have to walk a varying amount to get to the attractions.

The bus offers a 24hr ticket (as opposed to a daily ticket) which we found useful given that the last full tour was around 1940hrs.

Main issues were the next morning we got on the bus to find that the audio wasn't working, we weren't told as we got on the bus which would have been helpful, it was only on enquring that we were told they were all out of order so we got off to wait for the next bus. Some of the audio points weren't working-terrible service. To be honest when we eventually got onto a bus that was fully functioning the audio description isn't great. Rome is a city with history on every corner but you'd find there'd be huge gaps in between (sat if traffic for countless minutes) where'd there'd just be repetitve music playing over and over.

We didn't really have any issue waiting any length of time for the buses but in reality we just gave up using the service as it was much quicker just to walk unless it was the evening.

I'm not sure how the rest of the companies offering a similar service compare, if I were to go again I wouldn't bother with a HoHo bus I'd either use public transport or walk. There was no value in using a HoHo over a normal bus.
