Opposite the Spannish Steps in Piazza di Spagna their ice-creams are great. We promised to return to this gelateria on our last visit to Rome and we certainly did. Cioccolato is to die for however the limone is equally good.

A hot summerday in Rome. How to refresh? Yes, gelato. Nice-looking gelateria, just in front of the Spanish steps. A short line to the icecream desk. Found out that pay first to the cashier, and then with the paid check to the icecream man. There was a hard working man behind the icecream containers, and four others not so busy, trying to spend their time and ignore the customers lining on the other side. Someone wondered aloud why there are five men behind the counter and only one serving. Just after that one of the four took a sour, unpolite face and started serving the people in need. Non-serving attitude. Probably a good marketplace does not require to be serving or polite. Buy Your icecreams somewhere else.

On our last night of a magical three-week trip to Greece, Sicily and Italy we found ourselves at Rome's Piazza di Spagna in search of a quick meal, pizza and gelato. A pleasant and polite young man invited us to look at the menu of the Barcaccia, what appeared on the first floor to be a lovely little gelato and pastry shop. After deciding to have dinner, we were led to the second floor and surprised by the beauty of the restaurant, light and bright, spare and elegant. The food was so very good, from thoughtfully prepared starters (rabbit terrine, beef tartare like no other) to main courses (stuffed saddle of lamb, seabass fillet in bread crust) reflecting the talents of a true chef. Desserts were divine and then some. We sent our compliments ("this was the best meal of our trip") to Chef Roberto Agostini who came with a second tray of desserts (oh, the airy macaroons with basil!) to speak with and thank us personally. All of this with a view of the Piazza transforming in the evening light! Treat yourselves. You can not do better. When in Rome, eat at the Barcaccia! We would happily do so again and again.

We happened upon Barcaccia late one evening after watching the UEFA Champions League Final at the nearby Highlander Pub. By the time we reached Piazza di Spagna it was probably 11pm and most places in the area were closing or already closed. We stopped at the gelateria downstairs and were greeted by one of the staff members for the restaurant upstairs. They too were getting ready to close the kitchen but were more than happy to seat us for a late dinner. The overall service was excellent - the waiter kept checking in on us from afar to make sure we were alright without actually interrupting. After dinner (we had the tenderloin with potato pie and green beans with a yummy assortment of breads) we were asked if we wished to enjoy some dessert and after a few moments to review the menu he recommended the soft chocolate and rosemary vanilla gelato. WOW. It sounds simple, but it was one of the best executions I've ever had. Overall I cannot say enough positive things about this experience. Friendly staff (we even got smiles which is a bit of a rarity in Roma!), perfectly paced service and excellent food. We will most certainly revisit on our next trip!
