Perhaps doing as much research as I did raised my expectations, as all this comany's reviews are positively glowing.
We booked a few months in advance a tour for early Jan on the colosseum - at the time of booking the VIP undergroud was not available (as often during the winter period this area is closed to visitors) I contacted the company and was told that I should book the Premium Colosseum and if the VIP underground became available they would offer us the upgrade and we just pay the difference. We never heard from them before the day.
We arrived at the meeting point to find they were running two tour goups that morning, the VIP underground (we initially wanted) and the standard one we had booked - I enquired to the group leader about upgrading but was disregarded and asked to join our group leader. Then it turned out that the only people in our group was myself and my husband, which was great in that we essentially had a private tour, but then I dont see why they couldnt accomodate my request to upgrade to the other tour style/route and allow us to do the VIP underground and pay the difference as the head office said we would be able to do.
The information provided was interesting delivered at fast pace, there were always opportuinities for questions and with opportunities for photos (this did feel a little pressured at times) - The Paletine hill and Roman forum was a little bit of information overload due to the speed of delivery but as there are so many significant sites in the area this is also understandable.
The tour finished early, probably due to the fact that there was only the two of us and the timing is normally worked out allowing for a group dynamic for walking/question time.
Unfortunately the pictures we did get in the colosseum were poorly exposed due to the bright direct sunlight light early in the morning within the colosseum. This is obviously no fault of the company and has no effect on my rating, however we did return to the site again, and found that all the information we were given in the tour was exactly what is provided on the walls/signs all available in English so we could have saved ALOT of money by just doing it ourselves
- if you are willing to do the reading, save your money for a tour of the streets/churches that have layers that you wouldnt otherwise notice without a guided tour - these are sites well catered towards tourists we wouldnt reccomend doing a tour of either the colosseum or paletine hill/roman forum - read the signs or get the audio guides at the gates and do it at your own pace!
