We went to Marco G's after reading several Trip Advisor reviews and definitely weren't disappointed. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior - the inside is cozy and welcoming. They were able to give us a last minute reservation on a Friday and from start to finish, the service was friendly, relaxed and considerate even thought they were busy (ie they asked us how much time we would like between courses, apologised for making us wait for all of three minutes for our drinks, etc). Marco and the other waiter both had a great sense of humour but also knew when to just leave us to it. The ambience was nice - brick archways, plaid tablecloths - just the right balance of casual and elegant.
The food was delicious - I had the octopus salad to start which was a warm salad with the most tender grilled octopus I've ever had, along with potatoes, celery, and paprika. It was well-seasoned and exceeded expectations. My husband had the buffalo mozzarella and parma ham as well as a pasta course - the portions were huge so they asked if we wanted to sit for a while until our mains arrived, which we appreciated. The carbonara was superb, as was the house red.
I had the fillet with pink peppercorn sauce and my husband the grilled skirt steak - both were cooked perfectly and were delicious.
We didn't have room for dessert (the portions really are larger than we expected) but we left very happy with our choice of restaurant. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a nice restaurant in Rome which still offers elegant yet casual and relaxed dining, delicious food and excellent service.
