“Hangin' with the Romans!”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

In a piazza overshadowed by the Pantheon is hidden an elegant, well run restaurant called Clemente Alla Maddalena. One block from the famous landmark is the piazza of Mary Magdellan. Ristarante Clemente sits on its corner with gorgeous inside rooms and an expanse of covered outdoor tables extending into the active piazza. A very experienced staff provides exceptional service. The food is extremely creative and well done, from black pasta with calamari to Roman lamb chops, veal cheeks and other dishes you just don't see on most menus in Rome. This is a very good restaurant that few tourist know about. We felt like we were hangin' with the locals that evening.

“Great place near the Pantheon”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

I had a great meal here. It was a bit pricey, but good.

The music I heard on the square was really great.

Two tips for eating in Rome:

First, NEVER sit on the outside edge of outdoor seating. You will be hounded by peddlers.

Second: For those who are not used to Italian authentic food, pasta is meant to be al dente, so you should expect the pasta to be a bit undercooked compared to American cooking.

“A dissenting opinion”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

If you are not speaking Italian, there are two classes of restaurants for you in Italy: in one, you will be treated as a guest, in the other, you are a tourist. Clemente alla Maddalena belongs to the second category. Ambience: We had a table outside on the Piazza della Maddalena. Every five minutes or so, we were accosted by some seller of silly fluorescent toys, of robotic little toy animals, of flowers, etc. etc. In the background, the constant dim of mediocre street musicians. Service: slow, inattentive, with a kind of fake politeness that cannot conceal the pushiness. Food: average to below average. Our order for pasta was messed up by the waiter, and when the correct item arrived after a long delay, it was (al dente) x (al dente) and overly salted. Some of the portions on the other orders were also quite small. Wines: we tried several by the glass, all unremarkable. The bottom line: We paid about 90 Euro a head for three courses of unacceptable to average food and a glass of wine and found this vastly overpriced. Examining the details of our bill later that evening, we discovered that we had also been overcharged significantly compared to the prices listed on the menu.
