After seeing the line to buy tickets at the airport, we decided to go with a shuttle van which was 1E more per person...wish we'd taken the train. It took nearly 1.5 hours to get to our hotel, which was 6-blocks from Termini station. It would have taken 30 minutes. Took the train to the airport on our flight out. Somewhat simple to locate - look for the sign and follow the crowd with suitcases :). It was quick and dropped us off where we needed to be. The airport checkin...is more confusing though. Electronic boards list the checkin counter by number for your flight (not the gate!). We were looking for the airline listed on our itinerary when our flight was operated by a different airline. We ended up standing in the same line 3 times since we were so confused! A wonderful woman who spoke English helped out. Thank goodness for nice people.

This is the fastest and most reliable way to travel between Fiumicino airport and Rome city centre. Trains travel every 30 minutes during the day and the journey takes about 30 minutes. The fare is 14 euros and tickets easily bought from a machine on the station. However YOU MUST VALIDATE YOUR TICKET by putting it in one of the cream coloured machines at the side of the platform before boarding the train. I saw lots of innocent travellers get caught by the ticket inspectors and fined 50 euros each for travelling without a validated ticket. There are no signs reminding tourists about this. It gives a very bad impression to tourists as they leave Rome to be fined after they honestly bought a ticket.
Alternative public transport buses are about 5 - 7 euros one way but take about 50 minutes depending on traffic jams.

We travelled on this service and it was cool, clean and relatively quick. Having taken a number of local trains from airports into central zones (London, Paris, Barcelona,) this may be a little expensive but worth the cost to get to your destination quickly and smoothly at Termini station. Security is excellent with cameras in all the carriages which is far better than our experiences of catching/stopping pickpockets on the local trains in Barcelona and on the way to Sorrento from Naples. Kids travelled free which was a bonus and the ticket staff at the airport very helpful with good English.

So easy to get from FCO to Rome.
€14 per person, not the cheapest but so easy and it's direct. Trains leave every 30mins and the journey only takes circa 45mins.
Beware of pickpockets at Termini station. Also make sure you get your tickets at FCO from the official ticket desk and not an agency as they add a fee and are just there to rip off tourists who don't know what they're doing!
