Traveling as a family of 7 that includes younger children, private tours are the best way to go for convenience and flexibility. Prior to our trip to Rome we researched through Trip Advisor the top companies in Rome. We decided that Easy Italy had the tours and the schedule that best suited our time frame. The company had great reviews and after meeting 2 of the company tour guides, we can say that the reviews are accurate! We first meet Massimo when he picked us up at our hotel. He was on time and had taxi service ready for our group. We were jet lagged and he worked us through the Vatican and managed to keep all of us, kids included, involved and entertained with his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sites. He knew his way around the museum and took us off the beaten path for some of the sites the children would love the best. He wouldn't just teach you about a particular piece of art, he would then use his ipad to refresh your memory of the art work you just saw and how it connected or was interwoven in the history of the next work of art you saw in another gallery. It was pretty cool and he seemed to have endless knowledge of the subjects, endless patience with the children and endless tolerance of all of our questions.
Our next day was spent with Marco for a city tour. He was again on time to our hotel. His van was comfortable for all of us. His ability to drive through Rome's crazy traffic was amazing. He grew up not far from our hotel and some of the sites he took us to were made even more fun because he could relate to the kids how he grew up near by playing. He gave us a huge history lesson on not only old Rome, but current Rome and how families live today. I don't think there was a site we didn't see in the city. Since we were in a private car vs a large tour bus, we were able to weave through places that buses can't go. The kids especially liked how he worked us over to the cannon fire at noon.
Emails with the company were easy. Our whole experience was perfect. Cost compared to the tours offered via our cruise company were so much more economical and again with children, a private tour makes life so much more relaxed. Both tour guides were easy going and so accepting of the kids that everyone had a great stay in Rome.
