Who: My wife & I (mid 30s)
When: May 12-15
Where: Room 5
Why a "Very Good" Rating:
-Very unique property; it served as 13th century defensive tower. One room on each floor.
-Excellent location; about a 10 minute (hilly) walk from Cavour Metro, be warned if walking with suitcases it can be a hike with the hills and cobblestone. But the property is very convenient to the Via Novembre bus stop.
-Helpful & accommodating staff; Alvin prepares a great breakfast spread every morning with the most amazing blood orange juice on the rooftop terrace & Igor is very eager to assist you with travel plans & tips. We weren't aware our week metro pass also covered the buses; thanks Igor!
-Spacious room, with comfortable bed, large sofa and computer work station (w/ Internet)
-Bathroom a bit on the small side. Massaging shower was a bit confusing; it felt like you were getting into a rocket ship. To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the shower.
-Very nice bathroom amenities, including slippers.
-Reasonably priced mini bar in room
-In room NESPRSSO machine was a very nice touch
-Free Rome Guide book & list of restaurant recommendations upon check in
-Last and certainly not least and perhaps the main reason we booked was the rooftop terrace with HOT TUB! Simply spectacular views of the Victor Emmanuel monument.
I'd be remiss if I did not recognize the owner/manager Sarah for treating my wife and I to a bottle of Champagne when she learned that our visit to Rome was two-fold; we were celebrating our anniversary and we were participating in volunteer work in the city. THANK YOU SARAH!
-There are promotional discounts if you book through their website (there is also an offer for a free bottle of Prosecco!); the discounts are helpful considering the rates are a little pricey.
-Other reviewers have mentioned it but worth noting again that the walk up to the roof top terrace is up an extremely winding glass staircase; in addition some of the glass steps looked a bit cracked and weathered. It seemed there were some contractors there during our visit examining the steps.
-We noticed a strange odor on the terrace some mornings and in the evening when we tried the hot tub but we could not make out the source.
Overall, Torre Colonna is a solid "Very Good" with only a few minor details holding it back from an "Excellent." However; I would still highly recommend treating yourself to this unique B&B experience.
