“La Cisterna restaurant is a place in Rome not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2009

We have just returned from a trip to Rome where we stayed at the fabulous Majestic Hotel and were recommended by Sr. Claudio on the concierge desk to celebrate a birthday at La Cisterna. The taxi driver had some trouble finding it but it was all worth- while when we received a very warm welcome from the owner and staff. We were given a table outside (best place to be) and enjoyed perfect and friendly service from Sr. Dino (?) who has been working at the restaurant for 74 years (yes 74), but you would not believe it as he is a very spritey 'young' man. One of us had the roast lamb which melted in the mouth and the other a veal chop which was also very good. The price for all the food and wine for two was very reasonable (€70). They also seem to have a resident duo who can certainly play and sing all your favourite italian tunes as they serenade at all the tables.
However, as other people have mentioned, ask to see if you can go downstairs which is a wonder of the old Roman times where the water was collected from a well, which is still there, and the history related by another of the long-serving waiters (sorry have forgotten his name but he is the one who speaks excellent English and knows the all stories and legends) makes for a long time memory of a great night out in Rome.
We would highly recommend this restaurant

“Great Rome dining experience! La Cisterna”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 26, 2009

When we arrived at La Cisterna at 6 after a day of touring Rome we were told that the restaurant didn't really open till 7 , but instead of being turned away we were welcomed in given a complimentary bottle of wine and a great bruschetta. Dino ,a senior waiter, asked if he could order for us and produced a meal that was incredible and took into account the gluten allergies of our daughter. We were serenaded by a trio and blown away by the quality of the food, beyond many of the famous restaurants we had dined in though out Italy. After dinner we were invited in to the museum below the restaurant by the owner where we enjoyed a complimentary bottle of champagne, while admiring a well {cisterna} dating back to 600AD. It was the perfect ending to a great dining experience. I would recommend the trip to Travestere section of Rome for a great reasonably priced meal.
