My girlfriend and I decided to put the trip advisor away for the night and pick a restaurant in close proximity to the Barberini cinema. We picked Ciao Bella due to its presentation and friendly waiters. The complimentary champagne was a nice touch, and due to this being our 2nd last night in Rome we thought we'd splurge a bit with a 40? chardonnay and some seafood. Wine and calamari were great but then we waited over an hour for our mains, while other couples who arrived after us were already finishing their desserts. Im convinced they forgot to bring it out. After the hour I asked the waiter how our meals were coming along and he said 'yes! I'll go grab them now.' The meals tasted great and the staff were quick to attend during, then we asked for the bill. The bill never came so we asked a second waiter. Both waiters continued to serve everyone else. It was nearing the time of our 9:30 movie session and we were becoming very confused and agitated. I asked the first waiter again after 10 minutes to which he replied 'sorry, yes.' More waiting. I motioned to the second waiter after another 10 minutes and he said 'bill, right?' Yes! We just wanted our bill. More waiting. 5 minutes passed so we decided to leave the outdoor eating area and walk inside to the desk. We said we've waited 25 minutes for our bill and would like to leave now. To which the bigger, older man (most likely the owner) sitting at the desk just pointed to the 'WiFi' logo behind him. Again, very confusing. The youngest waiter realised what we were doing and told the owner, who then said '104?'. The waiter printed the receipt but gave it straight to the owner. It sounded accurate so we handed over 120? to which he handed back 6?. Not 16?. Once again, extremely confusing. He saw our confusion and then pretended he made a mistake. Just before correcting himself, the young waiter signalled to the owner not to give it to us. By now it had just become comical so i patted the waiter on the back, laughed, and we strolled away. On the way to our movie we just had to search for Ciao Bella on Trip Advisor. No surprises with what we read. Dodgy businessmen who are very content ripping off tourists!
