“quiet little out of the way place”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

I found this restaurant through an article in Budget Traveler magazine. The restaurant is in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome, and a little out of the way, but worth the trip. If it's a nice night, eat outside, under the strings of lights. Service is a little slow, but it's Italy, so relax and enjoy. The house wine (we had the white) was €6 for the bottle, and was very good. My husband ordered the beef roll, and while he thought it was good, it wasn't amazing. But my pasta (spaghetti with pepper and cheese) was delicious. Perfectly al dente, with lots of cheese and just the right amount of cracked black pepper. Plenty of fresh crusty bread, and a plate of roasted mixed vegetable with seasoning and some olive oil completed the meal. The tiramisu was delicious and creamy, one of the best I've had. They were out of fruit (we had asked for some), except for bananas and pineapple, neither of which we wanted in Italy. With the bottle of wine, a starter (pecorino with honey....very good), the vegetables, and 2 meals, the total bill was €45! Walk around Trastevere afterward to walk off your meal. Fun and funky little area.

“my favourite restaurant in Roma”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

da Lucia is without doubt one of the best value and tasting restaurants in Rome. Ideal for a late long lunch or lovely summer's evening meal. Many of the dishes are seasonal, so not everything on the menu will be served every night. It also pays to book ahead or be prepared to wait for a table. If you're after a romantic old fashion trattoria meal, in the heart of Rome, this is certainly the place...

“Best Meal of the week”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

Four of us stayed in an apartment in Trastevere, seeing Rome. We ate in many different restaurants, mainly the tourists menu (€10-€15), some good, some very bad. Da Lucia was the best, we all enjoyed our starters, mains and puddings. The food cost a little more than some restaurants, but the house wine was cheap (€6 for a red and a white), and was very good. We will go back again, just for this restaurant. Lovely people.

“Simple, Good”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

For many years, this was a favorite of the academic types at the Acadamies up the Janiculum in Trastevere. It was really good, reasonably priced, and convivial. This led to write ups, probabaly based initially on word of mouth. But once it got into Gourmet Magazine and in the Delta Airlines flight magazine It became famous in the U.S. Now it is packed with tourists. One of the problems of becoming famous is that you attract all kinds of people who read about you and imagine that this is going to be THE place, with THE best, most authentic food in all of Rome. It is not, it never was, and it never tried to be. What it is, in fact, is a simple family run restaurant with a limited menu that has simple dishes that are very good. The Spaghetti alla Gricia, the Bocconcini con Piselli, and the Rabbit are very, very good. This is not haute cuisine, folks. It was, and at its core still is, a small, neighborhood restaurant in a small side street in Trastevere with very good food. Like the place down the street in Chicago that has the best hamburger, or the place around the corner in New York with really good Pastrami. In fact, they might run out of glasses, so you might have to switch between water and wine in your glass. I have eaten here for twenty years. I remember when you could not even get a cup of coffee after dinner. They only bought a machine about five yyears ago. To my knowledge, they still do not take credit cards. Do not believe for even a minute that the parmigiano cheese comes out of a can or that Asian waiters are a sure sign that the food is not any good, or that pride in Italian cuisine is going down hill. Just have reasonable expectations of where you are going, and have a great meal for not much money.
