Astonishing! Breath-taking! All the superlatives apply in every corner of the Vatican. The ceiling of the Cistine Chapel is awesome (No photos allowed) and the art gallery is unbelievable. You just don't have enough time to see everything!

We opted for a guided day tour including the Vatican and the Colosseum. It is the only practical and time saving way to visit any major tourist attraction. The guide provided so much information that we would otherwise have never known and made our visit so much more rewarding and enriching. We were whizzed in through separate "Tour" entrances right by crowds waiting hours in line to get inside. The only 'drawback' is that you cannot linger anywhere and cannot go off on your own to see other areas/rooms that are not predetermined by the tour. If you are unfamiliar with the city and limited by time, it is the only way to travel.

As we we were looking for the entrance to the Vatican Museum, we were approached by a tour tout and we ended up joining our tour. We had already paid for our entrance to the Museum and Sistine Chapel already, so our tour price was 20 euro instead of 40 euro. We skipped the queues and went straight through with our guide, who was brilliant. He was like a walking history book and was real passionate about the work we were seeing. There is so much to see, that you would be there for days/months etc if you stopped and looked at everything, so a guide is essential, to show you the most important bits and keep you moving. You can do it on your own, but only do it if you are confident in knowing what you will see and where it is. I definitely recommend a tour for the Vatican museum and chapel!! It takes about 2-3hrs, which was enough for us, but if you want longer there, than a guide may not be your best option.

unless you are very good at History and knows everything about the Vatican City. If not, getting a guided tour it's really worth the price. You'll learn so much about the paintings, the painters, the walls, the structure of the Vatican itself, and its history. Definitely worth it. You'll hear some fun and curious stories about that place. And not only stare at paintings without knowing their meaning. And that's for all ages. I am 22 years old and simply loved it!

You can not compare having a knowledgable guide to a hand held audio tour. Our guide was well versed in the history of the Vatican and shared all kinds of interesting and sometimes scandalous information with us. Really brought the history to life for us. My only critique would be that the tour is only about 2 1/2 to 3 hours long and it just is not enough time to explore all there is to see but that was how I felt about most places we visited. I felt a little rushed through some areas as there were a number of tour groups converging on the same areas at the same time. Perhaps if they staggered the entries? All in all. Well worth the money spent and would recommend to anyone- especially first time visitors.
