Like many others, we were shuffled off to hotel opera after booking with Sonya. Then they boosted our confirmed rate for our family of 6 from $250. To 325. I was able to talk him down to 300. But then he wanted to separate our 4 kids from us by 2 floors. We ended up right next to the kids but the room had no windows and wasn't much bigger than the bed. The breakfast attendants were very unpleasant. The desk gentleman was kind and helpful but it was definitely the worst hotel on our trip.

Kind personel that helps a lot. It was clean and internet was easy to access. The breakfast was lean, but sufficient. The room offered everything you need. The bed could use some improvement. The service and hospitality was good and for Italian standard even excellent.

This is a review of Hotel Opera (although we booked Hotel Sonya)....

Booked Hotel Sonya and had the taxi drop us off in front and we brought our luggage up the steps into the lobby to check in. Had a lot of luggage since we just disembarked from a cruise ship. So we get to the front desk and were told that although we booked Hotel Sonya, they have expanded and taken over another hotel a block AWAY, and THAT is where we would be staying (same price and terms). Although they did offer to transfer our luggage for us, we were somewhat taken aback by this and decided to drag it there ourselves in case it was not up to par. This was NOT fun whatsoever as we did not know what was ahead, and the luggage was very heavy (even with 4 wheels).

We arrive a block away at another hotel (Hotel Opera Roma), and it seemed nice enough. The staff was pleasant and helpful at both places; however, it seems deceptive (and extremely inconvenient) that they did not tell us to just have the taxi drop us at the OTHER hotel from the start. Kind of a bait and switch thing.

All that being said, the Hotel Opera was fine, but the whole initial experience left a bad taste. They did have Wifi and an elevator, plus a nice breakfast, although the breakfast attendant/waitress was not friendly or helpful in any way. Almost as if everyone in the breakfast room was a bother to her.

Bottom line is that the stay was fine. Hotel Opera is in a good location. Our room was a decent size, but our friends' rooms were very small. Their room safe was just sitting in the closet - not even bolted down. The linens were 'eh', the bed was like a rock and the pillows were lumpy, but the bathroom was extremely nice.

Room Tip: Stayed here although we booked (and confirmed) Hotel Sonya one block away. Before you let your taxi...

My wife and I selected this hotel from a Rick Steve's guidebook, and found it to be well worth stayhing at. Rome is not cheap, and we did pay a bit to stay here, but much less than most American tourists find themselves paying for lodging. The Roma Opera is a small place with modest rooms, a basic lift (elevator), a small lobby (but with free internet), on a side street. The young man at the front desk was extremely helpful, and supplemented our beginning Italian with understandable English - providing us with advice on finding popular sites by foot and Metro. Our room was basic but perfectly pleasant, and spotlessly clean.

The breakfasts were wonderful! Of the three hotels we stayed at in Italy (all serving nice breakfasts), it was only here that we were offered Cafe Latte made by a trained Barrista - just great! Lots of fruit, eggs, breads, and cereal.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Although a bit noisy on weekend nights, having a room overlooking the street does offer a nice balco...

We booked our stay at hotel Sonya but when we arrived they simply walked us down the street to hotel opera Roma which they also own. We are always uneasy when you do not get what you had booked but once checked in we were very happy !!!! The room was as expected king bed , bathroom , bar fridge, safe and very helpful staff. The location is the best for walking to lots of the sights or just three blocks to train station or a hop on hop off bus tour. Lots of excellent small restaurants in the area and on sat a small market two blocks over with lots of fruit. Only down side of the whole stay was the breakfast, same buns, casserol, few slices of ham and two pieces of scrambled egg THREE days in a row.. Most people had coffee, and yogurt with some granola. Staff cleaning breakfast area also very noisy banging dishes around etc.

Spent 4 nights here and can't fault the hotel. Excellent value for money in a very accessible. Helpful and friendly staff always had a smile for you.
Room was very clean and soundproofed. Tea and coffee provided as well as mini bar/fridge sat tv as well.
Would happily recommend.

Initially I booked the suite as this trip was for a special occasion. I was disappointed to be told 1 wk before my arrival that the jacuzzi had been removed from the room, when booking the room it also had three floors. On arrival it had two! However I was refunded half of my money for this which softened the blow!

So..
Location - great! Close to buses, metro and walking distance to all major attractions apart from the Vatican. Although we walked it! Plenty of restaurants nearby and an Irish pub 2 minutes away with live music

Room- despite the initial disappointment the room was clean and spacious. Maid everyday and quiet!

Breakfast- I would describe as typical European. Fresh rolls, croissants, cereals, cakes, boiled eggs, cut meats and biscuits. Find for the four days we stayed. Beware the angry breakfast lady that slams everything in sight.. Not good on a hangover!

Service- all staff really friendly and helpful, talking us through buses we needed and where the best places to go were

General Rome - colosseum and forum - do the 25 euro tour that covers both. I'm not usually one for tours but there is no information there so it's really interesting!
Trevi fountain - make sure you go at night!
Vatican museum - arrived early to avoid huge queues
St Peters - amazing and make sure you go to the cupola but take the elevator! You will never spend a better 2 extra euros!!! There is still a brutal walk after you get out if the elevator! Go on a sunny day!
Spanish steps - don't bother, they really are just steps!

Enjoy!!
