Owner description: Home of the world's most famous volcanic disaster when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., Pompeii is now a significant archeological site that provides an amazing glimpse into the daily life of an average Roman town over two thousand years ago.

Would thoroughly recommend a visit here, truly amazing, how advanced they were, even had piping through the streets for water to be pump through to the houses, still had the pictures in the brothel, the Roman baths in the houses.

They make you pay a high entrance-price to get in. Than you find out that their most attractive 'buildings' are closed due to lack of repairs/restorations allready for a long period of time. The whole site seems falling apart and no one seems to care about it. What's left is the usual stuff of Roman ancient sites.
No restoration activities at all. On the other hand this museum is getting lot's of money from UNESCO ( to restore it) and tourists all over the world.
Avoid this place because it's not worth the money you have to spend to get in. As I said before: a huge touristtrap. There are way better places to visit.

My last visit here was in 1990 and this place has gone downhill. The people of this town should be ashamed of themselves. The town is a big tourist trap and the people we encountered were not friendly or helpful and they don't even maintain this as they should. Spend your time elsewhere.

Visited the site twice over 2 days and still were left feeling we had missed a lot .Had been to exhibition in British museum earlier in the year ,definitely helps to have an idea of how things would have looked ,there is also a book available that has images of the buildings how they were, superimposed over the ruins ...with dvd,
got it for 10 euros don't pay 25 that some stalls were asking..
Audio guides are available from main entrance,we entered from entrance near town and got audio guide from info stall.......ok for short visit but did not have info for all the site s on map. There is one fast food restaurant and toilets in the site so don't be panicked by sellers outside ,however good to carry a drink with you as site is vast. Some areas were closed for restoration or ? but so much else to see... Villa of Mysteries definitely worth the long walk and if interested in the plaster casts of the bodies the garden of fugitives as well as in one of building sin the forum.
There are 3 entrances to the site 1 at the Pompeii scavi Circumvesuviana station (travellers can leave luggage here)audio guides from this entyance and a bookshop,1 in the market square where the coaches drop off and the only entrance you can use if you have the Artecard and another along the via Roma nearest to modern Pompei and to the other Circumvexuviana station Pompei (sancturo).......10 mins walk come out of station and walk straight down road to town square take a right across front of church walk along past the market stalls where you will be encouraged to buy and entrance is at end of market stalls it has toilets but no audio guides

We took ourselves off to visit ancient Pompeii. It is easy enough to do in that you travel to Naples then get the local train to Pompeii station. The ride takes around 45 min. The train gets crowded and you get to see the real Naples as you travel there. Once at the ruins, you are exposed to the element so be prepared because you do not want to cut the day short for reasons of too much sun exposure or too cold. You need to leave ID for the audio guides which are a necessity to really appreciate your visit. You get amazing view of Mt Vesuvius. Don't expect to see original artifacts as most are kept at the museum in Naples for obvious reasons.
