I have watched several documentaries on Pompeii, but until you get there and see it you can't appreciate the size of the town and the scope of ruins. It was interesting to see all the cultural relics of Pompeii, expecially the odes to the phallus and the ubiquitousness of brothels. It was a lot like one might think Sodom and Gomorrah were like, and it met a similar fate. The forum, basilica, ampitheaters, and temples were a treat, especially since documentaries of it tend to focus not on these sites but on the average man aspects of life in Pompeii (which apparently interests modern day academics more than the classical and political aspects).

If you're in the area then don't miss out on going to visit the ruins of Pompeii! We drove there from the Amalfi coast on the way to the airport, we parked at Via Della Anfiteatro. There is a manned car park there which is right next to one of the main entrances to Pompeii. There are lots of stalls set up outside to try and entice you into getting a tour guide and/or self guided tours. We decided to go it alone and i'm glad we did as it meant we could see what we wanted (as to do it all would take all day!) We had someone at the ticket desk highlight the 'must see' parts and we headed for those and veered off when we wanted.

There is a cafeteria in the centre of Pompeii that serves pizza/salads etc this was very busy as it the only place to eat in the ruins area. I would recommend you do Pompeii early and then go for lunch in Pompeii outside the ruins.

Take a camera, bottle of water, suncream and decent shoes! Its very hot walking around and very dusty.

Pompeii was fascinating! I will agree with others that it's hot in the summer so bring your water bottle. We were able to see so much. Frescoes, plaster casts of those buried in the ash, vases, statuary, buildings and so much more. Really advise getting a local guide or studying up before you go or you won't get to all of the interesting locations. Since I was with students, I wish that we had asked to skip the "red light" district but the collesium and theater were really nice. It was fun crossing the stepping stones and seeing where their fast food, bakeries, homes and temples were. We even filled up our water bottles at one of the fountains. As I've said in other Italian location reviews, students 17 and under are free for museums and some historical sights so don't forget their passports. Spending the whole day should be considered

This is an Amazing Place. The city is just fantastic and all the history that comes with it makes one wonder... Very well preserved and still ongoing excavations, this is a MUST for a visit. Take your time and enjoy!
It can be very hot during summer season, take water with you and good shoes.

Loved our visit to Pompeii, stunning and our girls enjoyed it immensely. We only intended to go for a half day and spent the day there. I would advise people to go early in the am, very hot mid day. €11 per adults, children free. Restaurant expensive for fast food and really the only thing available in the area. But the place is magnificient, a very memorable trip. Tip - bring lots of water, hats and an umbrella if you can
