While on a trip to Naples we took the train journey to Pompeii and it was a great decision!!!!! Sadly it was a rainy day on our visit, but it didn't dampen our experience too much. There is so much to see and it is advisable to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy your visit. We and to queue for 30 minute to get in which wasn't bad, but I highly recommend that your hire an audio tour guide which was only €6.50 and it helped to explain a lot of what you are seeing. Do not miss this trio if you are in the area.

This is one of those truly amazing places in the world, a place you've undoubtedly heard and read about since you were a kid, simply a must see. It is much larger than I expected, 2-3 hours of walking around and we saw maybe 20%. And there's so much more to see, artifacts and buildings, streets and frescos, graffiti (Roman) and magnificent paintings, then I had ever imagined. And they're still digging!

I have a great interest in Roman History, this was my third time to visit Pompeii and thanks to the guide I was able to see parts that I had not seen on the previous visits. I also learned that the Eruption of Vesuvius may not have taken place in August but it may now have been October.
This is a wonderful place to go and soak in the atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

Take time to visualize how life must have been at the time Vesuvius blew its top. It helps if you have a book with overlays as I did. (bought it secondhand on line) The walking, especially in the forum area and on the main streets is fairly easy although the climb up through the main gate is steep. There is an elevator off to one side. You may have to ask for it.
I've seen a lot of ruins in a lot of countries,. For sheer scope of the city (not an individual building) Pompeii is absolutely the best.

We visited here on a rainy day in late October, we took a 2 hour tour and then spent 2 hours visiting area not covered by the tour. We were staying in Sorrento, it it was an easy 30 minute train ride to the gate. The tour itself was quite informative and the price quite reasonable. In our own time we saw areas they are still trying to clear. even though the excavation has been going on awhile, 70% of the site has been reclaimed. It is definitely worth 4 hours of you time at this site. Once in, you can't leave and come back in, so have snacks and water etc.

It was raining on the day we visited and I guess that's why crowds were low as it is a fascinating place and definitely not to be missed when touring Italy. You feel as though you are part of history as you wander around the ruined buildings.
The clouds parted long enough for us to get a view of Vesuvius towering over the town at one point and it was very poignant. We also enjoyed the Pink Floyd exhibition under the colisseum.
We ate lunch at the small cafe area which was surprisingly reasonably priced for a captive audience and plenty of seats.

Both sites of Pompei & Herculanum are a priceless héritages of our past, and of a very advanced civilisation : houses with complex water supply systems, cities with a refined artistic life illustrated by well-preserved frescos...
It os really worth a visit and will leave you with unforgettable memories/ experiences.
Walking up to the top/ crater of the Vesuvio should not be missed either.
Only Naples is quite disappointing: so polluted that you cannot see the horizon line above the sea, so littered with rubbish...

Fantastic place, a must see. Sadly badly let down by rude & disinterested staff. The audio guide facility is expensive & it only takes cash, when asked if there was a cash machine I was pointed to one that was out of order & that had clearly been out of order a while. The response was a shrug as she carried on her conversatio with her colleague. The ticket office staff were equally disinterested, apparently there is a complementary brief guide that would have been handy if we had been offered or known about it.
This is an amazing place just be prepared to be treated as a hindrance by staff.

Quite amazing! We were fortunate to arrive early and were able to walk alone through the site alone. Within an hour, crowds arrived and the magic was gone. If you are physically fit and can get there as gates open, I think the visit will be much more rewarding
