In 2009 my wife and her sister and her husband spent a day on the Amalfi Coast ( off a cruise ship). We did not get to go to Pompeii on that trip but we were fortunate enough to be back on the Amalfi Coast in Sept 2012 ( we rented a villa in Praiano for a week) and Pompeii was one of our "musts." During the summer and via email we booked a two hour tour with Gaetano -- no deposit required -- and he was as good as advertised. It had been suggested that we tour Pompeii on our transfer day from Naples Airport to Praiano even though we would be a bit jet-lagged so as to save ourselves from using an entire day mid-week to go back and forth to Pompeii. That saved us time & money and Gaetano' enthusiasm and knowledge took care of the jet lag! In fact, even though our tour was scheduled for two hours, Gaetano insisted that we have lunch first at a nearby restaurant in order to relax, refresh, and regroup. That alone was a gift, and he waited ( with some buddies at another table ) for almost an hour and then, just like that, we were back in 79AD! Gaetano's obvious love for his work and his ability to explain what we were seeing was as good as I have ever had in a guide. It was a real treat to learn from him. At one point another tourist -- lurking nearby --began to ask him a question. Gaetano stopped him in mid-sentence and said that he could not answer as he was leading a private tour and his responsibility was to the 4 of us alone. In addition, he turned off his cell phone at the start of the tour so as to give us his undivided attention for our 120 minutes. He welcomed our questions and our comments and our two hours there were magical. We highly recommend him! As he said to us many times on that day, "Bravo."

This day trip from Rome was the highlight of our two and a half week vacation! We were traveling with our three children who have all learned about Pompeii in school. After a lot of research online, Gaetano's tour seemed perfect for us. Our expectations were high, and he exceeded them! Our three kids who are 15, 12 and 10 were completely engaged for the entire tour, and I know it is something they will never forget. My husband and I were too, although we are probably an easier audience. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone with children who have an interest in Pompeii. While it is a long trip from Rome, it didn't really feel that way, and I think that is largely because of how well organized the tour was. There was no waiting around, and the driver even made our lunch reservation for us in Positano. It was an amazing day!

Despite his name and experience, cost was comparable to the other tours we priced so we decided to go with Gaetano since he was recommended by Rick Steves and a few other websites. Everything was easy to book via email with Gaetano himself. We were picked up promptly in Rome by our driver Leo who we thoroughly enjoyed. Once in Pompeii we were greeted by Gaetano and his daughter and our private tour began. We did start with the bath, brothel regions but that is by design of the tour and the city arrangement itself and nothing seemed inappropriate for the teenagers in our group. It was blistering hot and he did a great job at keeping us shaded. He does come off a little arrogant and certainly runs a precise ship so I could see how some could be put off by this. But he is also professional, informative, entertaining and really caring about the area and the exhibit so our group had no complaints and enjoyed the tour. So if you want more warm and fuzzy maybe look elsewhere but if you want someone who is a VIP there, he is your man. We were given choices of what else to see that day and we chose to then continue with Leo down the Amalfi Coast and after several photo op stops ended in Positano for shopping and lunch which was nice. FYI - The next day we made a last minute decision to add a day trip to Florence and called Leo's company to use him again for this as we found him as great addition to the trip.

Gaetano was not just a great tour guide of the pompeii ruins, he was one of the best tour guides we had period. He is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable and you leave feeling like you really were living life in a ancient Roman seaport. Our teenage boys also loved it as well.

We saw a Rick Steves video of him taking a tour of Pompeii with Gaetano Manfredi and wondered if this was the best tour guide for us. It was very easy to contact Gaetano via email and he arranged for a driver to pick us up in Rome and drive us to Pompeii. After touring for two hours with Gaetano, we had a nice lunch in the garden restaurant there and then the driver took us to Sorrento. All went very smoothly, thanks to Gaetano's support. My family of four (including two twelve year olds) totally enjoyed our tour of Pompeii with Gaetano. He tuned into the interests of the kids and really made the history come alive for us. I highly recommend Gaetano Manfredi as an educator, guide, and travel professional. He also did us the favor of arranging for a driver to pick us up in Naples, a few days later, to drive us to Assisi. With four large suit cases, it was great traveling by van rather than by train, and was totally worth the money.
