The apartment was in an old palazzo overlooking a vibrant square in the historic heart of Naples. There was lots of information on arrival, including the use of a mobile with useful local numbers - Claudia, taxi etc, plus some treats to eat on arrival. Claudia couldn't have been more helpful, despite getting married the day we arrived, she still managed to pop in sort out the kettle, arrange a driver and car to go around the Amalfi coast and book a taxi to take us to the airport when we left. All with a radiant smile!
The flat was clean and very comfortable, with a balcony where we could people watch the youth in the square. The electrics were a bit eccentric, but not a problem and we managed to cook spaghetti and risotto successfully in the small kitchen. The square is lively and on a couple of occasions noisy, but the wooden shutters effectively muffled the noise - and I didn't use the earplugs I'd brought.
Lots of places to eat and drink locally - spoilt for choice really. And lots to see in and around the city.
Let me start by saying Claudia was a perfect host. She ensured we would know how to get there and was waiting when we arrived. We got a full tour of the apartment and then she and her assistant took the time to show us where we were in relation to the rest of the city. They even pointed out some must see areas of Naples and recommended a visit to the Isle of Capri (We went, but that's a different story!) There were lots of little touches, like a table of brochures and guidebooks for the region. Claudia also provided a cell phone to use during our stay to keep international charges off our phones. She even had a tray of snacks and a cold bottle of water waiting for us when we arrived. The night before our departure, Claudia called and arranged for a taxi to pick us up the next morning right inside the square. Claudia made us feel welcome and I am sure I could have called on her for anything I needed!
The apartment itself was amazing! Huge rooms, all tastefully decorated to reflect it's history, but still fully usuable. While there are 2 bedrooms, we only used the master. The bed was super comfy and there was even an A/C unit in there for hot days. The bathroom was just fine and had a roomy shower stall. Both bedrooms and the central room opened on to a balcony overlooking the plaza. We had a lot of fun just observing the crowds during the evening as locals and tourists mingled. While it can get a bit noisy on the weekends with impromptu "jam sessions", it just added to the local flavor of being in the middle of the historical part of the city. The double doors do a great job of shutting out the noise when you're finally ready for bed. We had no problem sleeping through the night. I know some reviews mentioned how small the kitchen is, but that shouldn't be an issue for anyone vacationing in Naples. There were 6 different cafes/restaurants just in our plaza, all reasonably priced and open from very early until late evening. If you're willing to walk a few minutes in any direction, there are plenty more to find. Cooking should be the last thing on your mind in such a wonderful city!
I can't recommend this apartment highly enough. It's essentially the same price as a hotel, but in the heart of the city. If you're looking to experience the local flavor of Naples, this is definitely the place! If I'm ever fortunate enough to come back to Naples, I'll plan my stay around Claudia's availability!
Domus Decumana is in the heart of Naples and truly gave the four of us the flavor of the city. It was a perfect spot to savor the city, its restaurants, pastry shops, shopping, churches and museums. It was a 10-15 minute walk to the Subway and from there a quick ride to the train station, connecting us with Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento and Rome. Claudia and Stefano were very welcoming and helpful. The apartment was amazing with its historic old world charm, spacious rooms, balconies overlooking the piazza, and beautifully painted ceilings and antiques. Claudia supplied us with everything we needed for a great time - including delicious breakfast items, a mobile phone so we could contact her easily and plenty of travel brochures. The apartment was very clean and beds were so comfortable. The piazza was a fun, noisy hub of activity, but closing the big wooden doors shut out the noise when we were ready to sleep. Be aware that this is an old building and running too many electrical things at one time will cause a blown breaker, and if you are there in the winter, the heat is programmed to come on only at certain times. Kitchen is well appointed, but small. We were very appreciative of the elevator to carry our luggage up to the apartment! We will definitely stay here again when we are in Naples!
Claudia was a fantastic host. Very accommodating and full of information about the area and places to visit. She even left us a mobile phone with which to contact her if needed. She welcomed us and saw us out at the end of our lovely stay. The furnishings and facilities are fab and the apartment has three balconies onto the square. That's one thing to be aware of - it can be noisy. However, the location is great as it is walking distance from so many things. The station for Pompeii etc. is only a15 min walk. There are many places to eat nearby, including a number of good places in the square.
We (two adults and two 15 year old kids) stayed in this spacious apartment for 4 nights. It is much bigger and even more beautiful than suggested by the pictures. It is really well equipped and very clean. The location is fantastic in all apsects -- the square provides 24hrs entertainment. On top of all this Claudia is delightful and wonderfully helpful.
I'd move in pemamently if I could!
This comfortable and spacious apartment in a historic palace was the perfect venue for our family vacation in Naples. Our host Claudia was perfect - very attentive, punctual and helpful in every way. The apartment location was ideal and Claudia made us feel at home in every way. She helped us to find our way in the city, arranged for a tour of the Amalfi coast, and she was always available to answer our questions. We couldn't have asked for a more wonderful experience in Naples.
Domus Decumana is a truly impressive apartment in the heart of the historic centre of Naples, located on Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. It is well appointed with all that you need for a city holiday with the added bonus that you find yourself living in rooms which were once part of a medieval palace. The photographs show this clearly.
The rooms are really spacious with high ceilings, some of which are beautifully painted. Beds are comfortable and the bathrooms well equipped. The kitchen is compact and fine for breakfast and for making hot drinks but not really suited for cooking full meals. This isn't really a hardship given the stunning array of eating possibilities within a short distance. The balcony overlooks the piazza and is ideal for people watching. The square itself can be very noisy at night with entertainers and revellers. The shutters cut down some of the noise but bring your earplugs!
The location is just about as good it is gets. There is so much to see and do in this lively and vibrant city and much of it is within a few minutes walk of the apartment. The owner, Claudia, was so helpful and informative and did everything to make our stay trouble free. If we go back to Naples we would stay here again!
