“Great stay in the centre of Naples”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

I'd received an email from the hotel prior to our arrival with driving instructions but as we were flying in, I called the hotels to get info on other options. The staff provided us with good instructions, spoke good English and were very helpful throughout our stay.

As other reviewers have noted, the hotel is down a narrow street, not far from the main shopping street of Via Toledo. Our taxi driver amazingly manoeuvred the car to the hotel's front door, narrowly missing the numerous scooters weaving through the street. The hotel is conveniently located in the Centro Storico, the historic centre and most attractions are within walking distance.

Check in was efficient. We arrived around noon, which is earlier than check in time, but our room as ready so we were able to leave our bags and go explore. The room we were in was normal European size, with enough space for a double bed and some room to move around in. We aren't normally bothered by small rooms so this was fine for us. Depending on which floor you're on, you may hear some noise from the street throughout the night (and church bells in the morning). We were on the second floor so we did occasionally hear scooter noise throughout the night but this didn't really bother us and ear plugs are provided for your comfort.

There is a small lift which was handy for luggage though we chose to use the stairs most of the time. Breakfast was served each morning and consisted mainly of cereals, cakes, pastries and cold cuts. Coffee and tea were served to order.

There is no restaurant at the hotel but there are many great pizzerias and eateries in the area (try the gelato at Fantasia!). A standout meal was the dinner we had at Hosteria Toledo. Good seafood, great local wines and a pear and ricotta tart which was gone in 2 minutes.

All in all, the hotel provided us with a convenient base from which to explore Naples.

First of all, I will not recommend a trip to Naples to anyone unless I am out for revenge. We had a couple of good moments there but we spent most of the time dodging vespas and hanging on to our money belts. But we didn't listen to anybody and went anyway. If you're as stupid as me and my family....go ahead....this hotel is very nice. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is very good.
They recommended a small family restaurant on their street which had the best food in southern Italy. The name of the place is Trattoria Antica Capri. We should have eaten there every night.

Room Tip: We chose a room with a terrace but it was too cold to use it. It didn't have a view either so I...

The staff at Il Convento were welcoming and helpful, providing local advice, calling taxis etc. It was a great help that we could leave our bags in their care after our early morning arrival.
We shared a room with our two children and the room was clean, spacious and met our expectations.
There was a generous continental breakfast and great coffee.
The hotel is conveniently located to see the sights of Naples and for public transport to the surrounding area.

Prospective guests should be aware that the hotel is located within a vibrant residential/shopping neighbourhood so if you leave the windows open be prepared for some late night and early morning noise from the streets outside. Ear plugs were provided although the children's sleep was disturbed. On balance this did not detract from our stay but I expect it would be a problem for some.
Take care when walking around Naples - those scooters appear from nowhere!

I have always opted for Novotel or Best Western for their well compact rooms and locations but this time I decided to go unconventional way and opted for Il Convento after reading lot of good reviews here on the Tripadvisor. After selecting this hotel, we were running short of money to make the advance payment so I wrote an email to them requesting for the extension of payment date. And to my surprise they immediately agreed and the room of our choice was reserved. We opted for junior suite room no.44. So we made the payment after a week without any hassles. We have also booked for pick-up from the airport and I was told that it was EUR 35 and the pick-up too went smoothly. The driver waited for us quite patiently as we took over 45 minutes to come out of the airport as our baggage failed to show up. But then I would not recommend the pick-up option as the actual price from the airport to this hotel is no more than EUR 23, which we realised on our way back home. So we ended up paying extra EUR 12.

The Junior suite: We spent first four days in this room. This room, according to me, is a standard room. The only exception is a private terrace that is attached to this room. The terrace is well maintained with lemon trees and some exotic plants. Truly a breath of fresh air especially for people who are trying to escape from the cold weather of the north. Another feature of this room, the breakfast is delivered to your room. The bath area consists of a bath tub, a wash basin, hair dryer, WC and bidet. The bath tub had grain of soils, which I later figured out that it fell from the open ceiling above. The ceiling is not covered with cement but with net. The huge water pipe is very much visible. Otherwise pretty clean area. Wifi too is free and speed was really good. Comfy bed and noise proof room.

Mezanine room: I don't know if spelled the name correctly. If not please excuse me. The price was EUR 135 per day compare to EUR 85 of the junior suite. The room is on first floor and has a small balcony. The room is comparitively big and meant for family of four. However, there were constant sounds and noises from the streets below. They provide ear plugs but it's of no use. The bed was big but was uncomfortable, the bathroom was a bit issue. They spend lot of space on that big wash basin but hardly on the shower area. So every time we took the shower, the floor flooded all the way to the start of living room. Plus once you're in bathroom you can hear the conversations happening in the next room and the constant sound of the pump. Wifi speed in this room is poor. The room was quite cold and lacked a heater. The bed sheets were quite thin so I took bed sheets from the other two beds meant for the kids. Lol.

Staff: The staffs Maria, Flavia and an exceptionally handsome guy with a beard (sorry I don't know his name) were really helpful and good. Our baggage came two days later and they all helped us by calling the airport on our behalf and jotting down the details for us. They were quite empathetic beings. Apart from that, they also gave us some nice tips about the places to eat and also organised our trips to Capri and Vesuvius. Both the trips were quite cheap. There was this incident I should share here. The Capri pamphlet said EUR100 per person (includes pick and drop, hydrofoil ticket, travel in Capri, guide and lunch). So we booked two tickets. But later that handsome receptionist realised that the actual rate has increased to EUR115. But then he gave his word so he charged us only EUR 100 voluntarily and paid the extra EUR15 per person from the hotel's pocket. It was always a pleasure to see the ever smiling receptionists after encountering the city's exceptionally rude people.

Breakfast: Now breakfast is the major part of your diet. It was bit disappointing as mentioned by a previous reviewer. Most of the items were either stale or dry. The boiled egg actually made me nauseating. A fresh bread, some fresh fruits and juice, a hot eggs or croissants will add the energy to the breakfast. After day one, I skipped the breakfast. So the hotel can focus more on the quality of breakfast. However, the coffee was exceptionally good.

Location: As the title says the hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the Naples. Stone throw away from the sea port, historic sites, shopping center, ATM centers, restaurants and some famous pizzerias like Brandi. The narrow-dark, wet and bit dirty lanes near the hotel is something I'm not fond of but then that's how the Spaniards built those Spanish quarters. Just be careful as lot of people drive their Vespas recklessly on those lanes. The blame falls always on you no matter how accommodating you are.

Room Tip: Opt for Junior Suite on top floor and you'll have a pleasant stay.

We stayed at Il Convento for a week with our two children. The rooms (one double, one single) were smart, nicely decorated and very clean, although on the small side. The hotel is very conveniently located in the Spanish Quarter, a few minutes from Via Toledo- good for the funicular, metro and bus. It's a good 15 mn walk to the centro antico. The staff on the reception desk are excellent- really helpful and pleasant. The big downside is breakfast: burnt coffee, stale cakes and bread, little or no fruit. The pillows on the bed were uncomfortable. Quite a few reviewers have mentioned the noise outside, but we weren't bothered by it at all.

Great location and easy to find - it's about a 10 minute walk from the Molo Beverello (port) bus stop for the airport. Helpful friendly English-speaking staff.Very clean. Not anything like as noisy as you'd expect, given the narrow street it's in. Quirky but tasteful furnishings and decoration. MiniBar in the room. Breakfast's a little basic but good coffee. Lots of great places to eat and drink close by. The only slight downside was the impressive-looking multi-jet shower didn't work at all, so we only had a hand-held one, but only a minor problem.

Room Tip: If there's two of you, take rooms 42 or 43. On the top floor (there is a lift), each room has it...

The hotel is situated in one of the narrow streets in the Spagnoli district just across the road from the convent from which its name is derived. Its a bit of a culture shock at first with mopeds and cars buzzing by in the narrow street but you soon see this as part of the charm of the situation. The hotel is a haven when you get back after a days touristing , tastefully decorated throughout with a comfortable room and very helpful, welcoming staff. The breakfast bar was good , varied and plentiful. There are good relatively inexpensive restaurants close by ( Hosteria and Valu) The hotel is centrally situated for all the main sites and would advise that if you arrive by plane to get the bus from the airport (3 euros) to the stop at the port (not the Garibaldi station) since the hotel is a 500m or so walk away up past the castle to the Via Toledo.
