Great hotel with friendly helpful staff, especially in the restaurant. We had a lovely spacious room with a view over the Bay of Naples and it was really quiet. The open air restaurant on the 4th floor is fabulous, as is the roof terrace and swimming pool on the top floor. It's not the most convenient location but the payback is the lovely old building and the great views. We stayed for 3 nights and my only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. Would definitely recommend and go back again

We booked two rooms here, one for the parents one for us. Theirs was pretty good, high up, roomy, and everything seemed to work (except the hot water the morning they left). We had less success. We had to get the maintenance guy up twice to get the shower to give us warm water (we never graduated to hot!). The wifi worked for the first two hours, and then packed it in. The air conditioning didn't work, and we were offered a fan instead. You couldn't open a window to let cool air in because of the traffic outside (but when the windows were closed this wasn't a problem at all).

Breakfast was pretty bad too.

The service was quite good, the waiters were helpful, but there just wasn't a big enough spread for the number of guests.

The atmosphere was really nice, reception area was lovely and the views from the 4th floor was really quite special over Naples, but unfortunately all those con's above really spoiled the stay for us.

Final point, my mum's gold necklace was taken from her room. A real pity...

Strong points: Wonderful friendly staff who go out of their way to help you; interesting quirky old building with fabulous views over the Bay of Naples; nice clean rooms; a lovely terrace restaurant and, in the summer season, a beautiful roof garden.

The problem areas are: the restaurant or more precisely the kitchen, the lack of maintenance and to some extent the location. The menu is short with about five choices per course, none of which are particularly interesting, but worse still it is the same everyday. When the food arrives it is at best average with a poor mix of flavours and inadequate attention to preparation. The service from the kitchen declines even further if the hotel is hosting a conference or a wedding which happened at least every other night whilst we were there. You expect better when paying around £60 per head.

On arrival we were told that the hotel was effectively closed as they didn't have any water supply to most of the bedrooms. This was handled very well by the staff and we were booked into another hotel. However, it is not what you want to hear when you have been travelling for three days and all the messing around effectively cost us a day of our holiday. And that really set the scene. For example, coaxing the worn out toilet to flush was an art form whilst the chambermaid studiously cleaned the broken toilet seat everyday but seemingly never thought to get it repaired. The shower controls didn't work properly and the towels were threadbare; sometimes even with holes. You wouldn't tolerate such in your home so why would you in a 4 star hotel?

Finally, the location becomes a bit of an issue. Yes it affords fabulous views over the city but it is not really very well connected to the metro. So if you want to eat out, and you will, then you either have to get a taxi or walk quite a distance up or down the hill.

I recommend a short stay at this hotel so that you can enjoy the good points before the downsides begin to dog you. Oh yes, it seems they switch off the air conditioning on the 15th September so you either roast or open the windows and get deafened.

Very good hotel high in naples. From the breakfast and dining room and also from the swimming pool on top , you have a great view on the city, the Vesuvio.
But the hotel is not very special. Coming back on foot in the evening requires some energy as it is really 'al monte'.
We had very good recommendations for lunch and dinner in the neighbourhood from the hotel reception staff, which was very nice.

San Francesco al Monte is good but not exceptional ...also the value for money must be thought.
The highlights are the view, instead of the breakfast place and the breakfast itself (continental - very goord).
The rooms are ok but if you look at the details of what is average for a hotel of this standard ....
This is a big ship to be difficult to maintain.
Access to the city below requires either a taxi or the funicular. We did not eat at the hotel.
Check your bill. When we set a meal for two was added. An error probably exceptional. There was no difficulty for this fixed.
The reception is normal. For French, a person at the reception speaks our language and gives good information to start discovering Naples .. a program ....

we had booked this hotel as a special offer on another website. £80 per night with b&b from £206. what a deal we thought and we were right. The hotel was very large and a great place to explore the city below. The hotel rooms were lovely. big beds nice linen and reasonable bathrooms. all rooms done in a distressed Neapolitan style.

The staff were excellent friendly and well informed. we arrived after the roof top pool was closed for the season, what a shame as this would be a fantastic place to relax after a days walking in the city. they also have a wedding venue on the hotel roof. wish we had known as this again would be a talking point for the rest of the guests as the view from the roof was amazing.

If you dont like a good hike into town then take the underground train just along the road from the hotel entrance. i would say that to walk through the narrow streets down into town is a must.
the hotel restaurant was very pricey . but the food was very good and nicely presented.

But there was not a hotel bar to relax in before hand so we had drinks in our room. a hotel with no bar ?

talking of which the views are amazing look at the shot i took from our room window. the second night we ate in a little pizza restaurant down the road again turn right from the entrance. it is a friendly family run place and has typical italian feel. Chaos, noise and humour, we loved it the food was plenty and good value. give it a go if you dont want fancy food and dressing up for dinner. just great regional cooking "Regine dello Zio" was its name 081405183 its number.
WHAT A CITY !

Room Tip: ask for classic double with sea view

We stayed here for two nights at the end of our Italian holiday. The desk was staffed by an efficient but not very welcoming gentleman.

Interesting hotel with stairways cut into the rock and lots of curious spaces left over from its original use as a monastery. Would be good to have information about its history and transformation.
We had a superior room with a balcony, which may have been shabby chic or just shabby, not sure. The room had a bit of a damp smell, the bathroom definitely needed an upgrade and the terrace was tired and soulless.

Upside were fabulous views, lovely restaurant staff and good food and the absolute oasis of the roof top pool which, despite advertised as closed at the end of Sept, was open. We had planned to spend the day at the Archaeological museum in Naples but as it as closed so decided to spend our last day relaxing by the pool, a beautiful escape from the noise and bustle of Naples.

Would consider returning but also explore other options, although the pool was delightful......
