The royal palace was begun in 1600 as a residence for the Spanish viceroys, but was extensively renovated under the Bourbons and was only completed in 1843. The self-guided visit includes the marvelous grand staircase, a private theater (the Teatrino di Corte) dating from the 18th century, the extensively decorated and furnished royal apartments, and the Cappella Palatina with its incredible altar covered in precious and semi-precious stones. The royal palace deserves a visit!
