The moment you step inside the hotel you know it has character; it's decorated and furnished in a rather random, quirky way like pre-chain continental hotels used to be in days gone by. The welcome was very friendly and throughout the stay the service from all of the staff, including the cleaners, was first rate.
Rooms also have their own character but share the qualities of being very clean with decent beds. My room was on the third floor at the side so there was plenty to see without it being too noisy (the double glazing is very effective). The lift only goes to the second floor so you need to consider this is you have mobility problems. All of the rooms have rather kitsch murals which add to the impression of individuality (I got cherubs). TV is mainly Italian with CNN and the odd German and French channel. My only two complaints were both water-based; I was woken a few times when the guest in the room next door flushed the toilet during the night and it was difficult to get the water in the shower to a constant temperature and pressure. Friends with rooms on the other floors experienced neither of these problems.
Breakfast in the basement downstairs was decent and generally well-stocked. You might want to note that there are two coffee machines and one is substantially better than the other. We also ate one night at the hotel in the evening and that was much better; simple great-tasting food like pasta and grilled meats. The set menu represents very good value for money and the local wines we tried were inexpensive and extremely drinkable.
There's also a small bar area which is a pleasant place to spend some time if you're staying in - there are absolutely zero other bars or pubs in the immediate vicinity apart from other hotels. Service was by a guy who moved with the speed of the butler in Tomb Raider II and who seemed to combine serving with portering at the front desk. Basically he served when he wanted to but somehow it added to the charm.
Every review appears to mention the location so here's my take. After a few of the reviews on here we were expecting a cross between downtown Mogadishu and a rubbish tip but it was infinitely safer and cleaner than we feared. We walked around the local streets until around 11.00 pm some nights and were never once hassled or felt remotely threatened. There are people around but they were basically just locals out for a good time. Occasionally some groups were a bit noisy but, hey, everyone in Naples is noisy. Towards the end of the evening and into the early hours there were a few prostitutes plying their trade on the opposite side of the street to the hotel (I assume they were prostitutes, otherwise they were waiting a long time for their bus). However they kept themselves to themselves and they were far enough away from the hotel that I can't imagine they or any clients would cause problems for any guests. As others have said the upside of the location is that access to the trains and metro is incredibly quick and easy,
Overall we enjoyed the stay at the hotel immensely and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive hotel in Naples that's welcoming, friendly and a little bit individual
