Grand Hotel Europa
Ranked #52 of 186 Hotels in Naples
Reviewed June 7, 2012

The moment you step inside the hotel you know it has character; it's decorated and furnished in a rather random, quirky way like pre-chain continental hotels used to be in days gone by. The welcome was very friendly and throughout the stay the service from all of the staff, including the cleaners, was first rate.

Rooms also have their own character but share the qualities of being very clean with decent beds. My room was on the third floor at the side so there was plenty to see without it being too noisy (the double glazing is very effective). The lift only goes to the second floor so you need to consider this is you have mobility problems. All of the rooms have rather kitsch murals which add to the impression of individuality (I got cherubs). TV is mainly Italian with CNN and the odd German and French channel. My only two complaints were both water-based; I was woken a few times when the guest in the room next door flushed the toilet during the night and it was difficult to get the water in the shower to a constant temperature and pressure. Friends with rooms on the other floors experienced neither of these problems.

Breakfast in the basement downstairs was decent and generally well-stocked. You might want to note that there are two coffee machines and one is substantially better than the other. We also ate one night at the hotel in the evening and that was much better; simple great-tasting food like pasta and grilled meats. The set menu represents very good value for money and the local wines we tried were inexpensive and extremely drinkable.

There's also a small bar area which is a pleasant place to spend some time if you're staying in - there are absolutely zero other bars or pubs in the immediate vicinity apart from other hotels. Service was by a guy who moved with the speed of the butler in Tomb Raider II and who seemed to combine serving with portering at the front desk. Basically he served when he wanted to but somehow it added to the charm.

Every review appears to mention the location so here's my take. After a few of the reviews on here we were expecting a cross between downtown Mogadishu and a rubbish tip but it was infinitely safer and cleaner than we feared. We walked around the local streets until around 11.00 pm some nights and were never once hassled or felt remotely threatened. There are people around but they were basically just locals out for a good time. Occasionally some groups were a bit noisy but, hey, everyone in Naples is noisy. Towards the end of the evening and into the early hours there were a few prostitutes plying their trade on the opposite side of the street to the hotel (I assume they were prostitutes, otherwise they were waiting a long time for their bus). However they kept themselves to themselves and they were far enough away from the hotel that I can't imagine they or any clients would cause problems for any guests. As others have said the upside of the location is that access to the trains and metro is incredibly quick and easy,

Overall we enjoyed the stay at the hotel immensely and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive hotel in Naples that's welcoming, friendly and a little bit individual

Room Tip: If there's a group of you traveling from the airport a taxi may well be good value as there are...

Hotel is in a great location for transport around Naples, the side entrance to Railway station is right opposite the hotel. The hotel is clean, the beds comfortable and the shower was powerful, all the things we want from a tourist class hotel. Reception staff were charming. The breakfast area in the basement we found rather depressing and miserable, as were the staff in there. Breakfast fare on offer was just about acceptable. As others have said, the area around the hotel may cause concern for some although we felt quite comfortable at all times of day it was quite sad to see the very young prostitutes from our balcony each evening and some people would feel very uncomfortable in the streets around. We did find it difficult at first to find any decent restaurants in the immediate area which was frustrating in the evening. As expected it was very noisy from street traffic at all times and fumes were a problem if the french doors on to the balcony were opened.A very average tourist hotel.

Excellent location for the train station for trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Staff excellent. Rooms spotless. Restaurant very good but plan to arrive early particularly if a large group staying in hotel or you may be eating very late. Tourist menu is good and very fairly priced. Take care however in streets surrounding the hotel ie guard your wallet from pickpockets and do watch out for them on the buses. I would advise taking a taxi if at all possible and reception will tell you what price to expect to pay (remember to agree this before getting into the taxi of course) Over all an excellent hotel, an island of tranquility amongst the chaos of Naples. Would recomend it if planning on visiting the surrounding sites.

I booked two rooms at this hotel, one for my wife and I, the other for her parents. This hotel is located within 5 minutes of the central train station; it is a 10-15 minute walk into the old part of town as well. The hotel staff are fantastic, the breakfast is great, and the hotel is clean and very comfortable. This is a family run operation and it is obvious that they take pride in their work.
The street which this hotel is located on is a little questionable. It seems to be safe though. It was great entertainment to watch the `working girls' at night from our balcony.
The only issue with this hotel is that school groups and the like are mixed in between all rooms. Our last night was a little uncomfortable as a school group stayed there and they were a little noisy. I would recommend that the staff separate the School/Stag groups away from the couples.

Would I stay here again?.......Yes, (1-2 nights max)

Located a corner away from Garibaldi, don't let the neighbourhood/entrance fool you, it's a brilliant little hotel, with amazing little hangings/paintings/little fittings. The hotel reception is extremely helpful (special shout out to Eda!) - they helped me plan out my entire Naples trip - Veuvius/Pompeii/Capri. Ordered ice cream very late at night and got fantastic home made chocolate ice cream - this was simply awesome! The room window opened into a building courtyard, here I was able to catch a few glimpses of the Napoli daily life. It rained a little during my stay, this window was even more beautiful at that time with the smell of rain on mud wafting in :) Would go back!
