We recently stayed at the Renaissance Naples and found it to be a lovely surprise. It was a modern and clean hotel in a quiet section of the city. We were able to walk to the boardwalk/promenade and were very pleased with the service during our stay. In particular, Luca, at the main desk, was tremendously helpful and went out of his way to make sure we were happy. Overall a relaxing visit.

We stayed in Naples one night before going to Positano. The hotel has a very nice lobby area and at the time of our stay was featuring an installation of a local artist. The decor was very contemporary and new. The room itself was clean and comfortable. Bathroom was a little worn but still okay since we only stayed one night. We were surprised to find the hotel food was quite good. We ordered a caprese and eggplant pasta dish which we really enjoyed. Hotel has wifi, but only in the lobby. Would have been nice to have it in the room. Staff very nice. Overall good stay, would go again.

We stayed at this hotel because we had points, and it was the only Marriott around. Overall I think it was great experience, and that people who complain about the dated rooms need some context. I myself love modern hotels and was bracing myself for Italy overall, since the Old World is, well, old. With that in mind, I didn't think this hotel was too bad - the rooms were decently sized, with all of the amenities that you expect from a Marriott. It definitely wasn't new or modern inside the rooms, but it wasn't shabby either. The lobby was very nice, and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Even though it said there was no wifi in the rooms, and that it wasn't free, we were given the code and it worked fine. They delivered a razor when my husband realized that his shaver was busted.

The location is great if you want to go to Capri or Sorrento - the ferry is within easy walking distance, and the front desk has printouts of all of the available ferries so you can plan ahead of time. We were able to walk to Pizzeria Da Michele, and the train station - though if you have luggage a cab is only 11 euros. Be sure to ask for the fixed rates BEFORE you get in the cabs.

I'll start by saying that we are loyal Marriott Platinum members. There are only 2 Renaissance hotels in Italy, this one and one in Tuscany, we stayed at both during our tour of Italy and could not believe this hotel is branded as a Renaissance -- we've stayed at Fairfield Inns that are nicer than this!

The only reason this review gets 2 stars is because the staff is very good and the view from the rooftop for breakfast (and the breakfast) is very good.

Pros:
- Location in Naples/Napoli, walking distance to everything (port, shopping / Via Toledo, historic center, etc...)
- Great staff
- Nice rooftop for breakfast

Cons:
- Dated rooms, old tough/lumpy beds... not what you expect from a Marriott, let alone a Renaissance
- Rooms/windows were not soundproof -- and the kids in Napoli are out screaming and playing in the streets all night...
- Walls are paper thin, you can hear everything that's happening in adjoining rooms... they can hear you too
- Ceilings are paper thin -- we were "upgraded" to the executive floor (10th floor) and with the rooftop breakfast floor right above us, we could hear people walking, dropping cutlery, and pulling in/out their chairs starting at 6am
- Needless to say, sleep quality overall is terrible
- Wifi doesn't work in the rooms, only wired internet

Interestingly, there seemed like more business travelers staying at this hotel than anyone else (judging by the breakfast crowd, anyway).

Check-in was easy, we were provided a platinum welcome gift, upgraded to the executive floor, and provided free wifi and free breakfast.

This was the first hotel in Italy that a tip was expected by the bellhop... at least that's how it felt since he awkwardly waited around for one before he would leave -- tipping is not typically customary in Italy as it is in North America, though we do tip when service is exemplary.

The platinum gift was delivered while we were out (bottle of white wine and some apples) but there was no corkscrew to be found and we had to call down twice to get a corkscrew -- the first time they brought a bottle top opener.

After the first night of hearing the neighbors love-making and the 6am breakfast rush, we asked to be moved to another floor -- we were given a room on the 9th floor. Somehow, we heard the breakfast rush with the same clarity at 6am even with the 10th floor as a buffer...

All that said, I'm not sure if there's a better hotel to stay at in Naples -- the first city in Italy we saw historic fountains with graffiti... I would go so far as to recommend staying in Sorrento (the Crown Plaza looked good) as far as your base for exploring the region.

(But, the pizza at Sorbillo "almost" makes it worth it to stay in Napoli! And it's very safe to walk around, we never felt unsafe at anytime)

As others have noted, the 19 euro "flat fee" to the airport advertised at front desk does not include luggage. For 2 of us with 2 pieces of luggage was 23 euros. The driver conveniently did not have change for 25 euros, he wasn't very nice and we were forced to tip him since we didn't have change...

Special mention to Paolo, he provided excellent service, was very accommodating with moving us to another room, and was extremely knowledgeable about the area and making recommendations.

Area recommendations:
- Definitely spend a day (even a night) on the Island of Capri, it's majestic
- Make your way to the Amalfi coast (spend a night so you don't feel rushed) -- World Tours gives a great tour for a fairly good value, ask front desk
- Pompeii... if you're really into history, it's interesting, but you almost need 8 hours there to see it all, it's a huge city (2 hours didn't quite feel like enough time)... I recommend getting a guide, the audio guide and map make it difficult to navigate, especially if you have limited time
- Eat the Margherita pizza at Pizzeria Gino Sorbillo -- the other "famous" pizzerias they will try to steer you to are nowhere near as delicious (i.e. Pizzeria Brandi and Da Michele) -- and enjoy with a beer, the wine is not very good

Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel, I just simply can't. I've written to Marriott to ask them to re-evaluate their stake in this hotel -- at the very least, this should be rebranded as a category 1, Fairfield Inn.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a lower floor, facing Vesuvio. If you're close to the 10th floor, chances are...

The location of this hotel is perfect for exploring most of central Naples. It is close to the port and most of the famous sights, while giving one breathing room at the end of the day. There are several good dining options within walking distance. Great shopping.

The hotel is very professional with exceptional staff like Anna and Luca at the front desk. Breakfast is on the top floor, with good choices and great coffee. It may appear disorganized at first, but soon you have the wait staff asking you if you would like coffee or cappuccino. The breakfast venue looks over the city and port and is amazing. I wish they offered dinner at night there as the view must also be spectacular.

The rooms are clean, with wood floors, and quiet. Professionals and tour groups stay there. The air conditioning functions very well with a consistent fan noise (instead of on and off), which is important for my sleep quality.

I would definately go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor.

We paid for this hotel with points, so I cannot comment on value, but it was a very nice hotel in a great location in Naples, close to shopping and dining. Front desk was friendly and helpful. Rooms were nice. We stayed in an executive floor, which I have no idea what the difference is. The room had old style CRT tvs, but not a issue for me as I never watch TV on vacation. They brought us a Wireless Router for the room so we would have wireless internet in the room, which was free in the executive floor. If internet in the room is a priority for you, just know that regularly internet only works in the lobby unless you are in a executive room. I am not sure if you have the option to pay for that separately.
We only needed a room for one night before our early morning flight home, so this was fine for that.

Nice enough hotel but not in the best area. We stayed here one night prior to our flight home. Did not feel safe walking the area for dinner, city was dirty, trash all over the streets. Free breakfast was ok, service was average. As always, Marriott beds are the best. Our room had a private outdoor sitting area which was nice. Nice views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesivuis.
If you take a taxi to the airport, be sure to get the current local regulated fare from the front desk clerk, our taxi driver tried to charge us 6 euros more than the regulated rate, but when we told him we knew the rate, he backed off.
