Royal Continental Hotel
Ranked #41 of 185 Hotels in Naples
Reviewed July 12, 2013

The hotel itself is located on the sea front opposite an old fort. The man-made harbour lines the coast line. There are great views from the hotel.

However, we paid an extra £142 for a "luxury room with sea views" - granted they gave us sea views but it was hard to distinguish the luxury from the standard double room.

We had set off at 3am for a 6am flight and arrived at the hotel at 1030 but they absolutely refused us a room until check in at 2pm. Even then we had to wait another 30 mins till our room was ready ... sorry, our standard room was ready.

There was no hotel services book in the room which made it difficult for my girlfriend to book a massage in the spa. When we approached the front desk, the only menu was in Italian and no one seemed willing to translate.

The hotel itself was clean, tidy and well appointed. The staff (apart from earlier spa incident) were helpful and spoke excellent English. I feel they could do more with the restaurant especially with the view on offer.

We had further upset when we checked out and were charged a city tax of 18 euro. There was no mention of this from lastminute.com, TripAdvisor or hotel information. Although in reflection of our time in Naples, its unsurprising.

A great hotel but we didn't get value for money at this hotel.

Room Tip: Get a sea view but try not to pay extra for it.

Dear Guest,

I thank you very much for sharing your feedback concerning your recent stay at the Royal Continental Hotel in Naples and I am pleased to read that you enjoyed your vacations and the location of our hotel.

Our check-in time is normally 2pm but upon availability we generally do our best to check you in earlier. Regarding the massage services, I apologies for the inconvenience and be informed that we are working on a new massage list in Italian and English. We are indeed welcoming any opportunity to improve and it is the reason why your feedback is so important for us.

Finally, the municipality of Naples approved a city tax (starting from July 1, 2012), applicable to all visitors staying in hotel throughout the municipality and I inform you that this information is present on all hotel’s confirmations.

I sincerely hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcoming you back to the Royal Continental in Naples.
With renewed apologies and assuring you of the best of our intentions at all times, I remain

Yours sincerely,

Not the cheapest hotel in Naples, but you get what you pay for. All rooms have sea views and the pedestrianised street outside the front of the hotel is a godsend for walkers, joggers and families taking a stroll.
The rooms were of a high standard as was the breakfasts (way too much choice and all tasting delicious, especially the coffee).
The reception staff were excellent, always willing to help and offer advice of what to see or do, and how best to get there.
Did not have time to try the rooftop pool, or the gym, but both seemed very popular.
My only slight irritant is the free wifi. You need to collect a "sticker" from reception each day with the wifi code. I found difficulty in establishing a connection (on 8th floor) but others in our party were ok.

Room Tip: 7th floor and above means you are not overlooked and views across the bay are stupendious.

With an ideal location, the Royal Continental is close to both the seaside and city center, the historical area of Naples, the Piazza del Plebiscito, the famous Teatro San Carlo and the harbor, which leads to the Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, as well as to the islands of Capri and Ischia.

My room was clean and perfectly acceptable. The hotel wasn't too busy during my stay, but I guess when it's full there could be delays at the lifts.

On a scale of 1 (bad) to 10 (excellent)
My rating 6. Good.

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Our room was in the building on the right side. The hotel was having some kind of medical convention, and for the 3 nights we were there we had to fight the crowds to get to the elevator. There were holes in the hallway walls, no balcony furniture, mold in the bathroom and the t.v. was not watchable from the bed. Overall experience, horrible!

Great location, rooms good plenty of space.
No tea or coffee making facilities, though safe in room free and big enough for an iPad.
Swimming pool only open 11.00am till 7pm which is disappointing as we like to swim early before we go out. Disappointment eased as it should not really be called a 'swimming' pool it was a plunge pool.
Also if you like to use your own electrical hair styling equipment you will need to bring a mirror as there is no electrical point near a mirror.
We were disappointed to be given a room on the side of the building as we love to spend time on the balcony, all the balconies on the front had chairs and a table, we had no furniture on the balcony which made it unusable.

The Royal Continental is a rare hotel. It offers friendly and efficient service combined with spotless rooms and some of the best views in Naples overlooking the sea and the Castell dell'Ovo, Naples' oldest castle.

The food was excellent. Dinner at the hotel turned out to be an unexpected treat - wonderful Italian cooking in all its variety - and a great antidote to previous over consumption of pizzas all around Naples. After dinner you would be missing out if you did not promenade along the seafront. Night time is when everyone comes out - families, couples, groups of teenagers - it makes a great end to the day.

Room Tip: Although seafront rooms are good, you still get the sea view at breakfast and in all other areas of...

Four stars for the Hotel Royal Continental, a hotel on the seafront promenade of Naples with a fascinating past, rebuilt in 1955 by Ferdinando Chiaromonte where once stood the Grand Hotel Royal des Etrangers . Today it is known as a structure of great prestige framed by the extraordinary beauty of the Bay of Naples. Large common areas , multiple meeting spaces , picturesque corners of relaxation, the Royal Continental sparkles elegantly with vintage charm thanks to the interiors designed by Gio Ponti , one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. All 397 rooms, of which most have large windows and a balcony facing the breathtaking view of the Gulf, are spacious and very bright. On the Floor Museum Gio Ponti you can stay in one of the 24 rooms with wooden furnishings and fixtures designed specifically for the Hotel by Ponti. Suspended furniture, three-drawer chests with feet, and magazine racks and lamps in satin brass integrated into headboards from briar have made the history of Italian design. In stunning New York style, the Roof on the tenth floor, from which the beautiful view of the ancient Borgo Marinari and the legendary Castel dell'Ovo can be enjoyed, presents the one of a kind sea-water pool designed by Gio Ponti, published in 1954 on the cover of Domus. Guests are offered the solarium, outdoor bar, Fitness Center, massages booked in advance and two exclusive restaurants with spectacular panoramic views that stretch from the Vesuvius to the hill of Posillipo and the island of Capri. Breakfast served by the sea, in addition to the buffet which offers freshly baked pastries by Hotel Royal Continental, including oven fresh Neapolitan sfogliatelle, pastry horns. Location of reference for events and meetings, the Royal Continental is a well known Conference Center of primary importance in the national scene.
