Owner description: The only active volcano on the mainland of Europe, Mount Vesuvius is famous for the calamitous eruption in 79AD, which buried the towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii.

From naples Main train station , take Circumvesuviana lines towards Sorentto and get down at Ercolano scavi (9th stops ). after getting off you will see a sign board for Vesuvian express bus service. bus ticket 10 Euro (bus can be some private car in case there is low number of people) we were having 6 person and got a 8 seater Car. If you are visiting Vesuvius in off season like I went on january, it's less crowded and you can buy the Crater ticket at the top. we bought it from the Vesuvius express (10euro +10euro=20 euro), but no body asked us to show the ticket while entering cretar. Worst thing is the bus will give you 1:30 hrs time which is not enough to see the crater at all. ticket price is 3:60 euro (round trip) from Naples Garibaldi to Ercolano scavi.
I read in trip adviser that there is also available route to reach vesuvius from Pompeii. but when I reached there in Pompeii they asked double price and told that in off season the bus services are not available. so small car cost 20 euro without crater ticket.

Is it possible to complete Pompeii and Vesuvius one day? well, Vesuvius can be seen in 3 hrs , but Pompeii will take at least 6 hours , so I wouldn't recommend to plan it on same day. It's exhausting too.

Best Pizza? We were searching for the best one , somehow eventually satisfied with the PIZZA BABA.

What a great experience!! We booked a trip (driver to Vesuvius) in Pompei & shared the mini-bus with another couple. The driver said 1 1/2 hours would be enough time to go up & down but this is NOT true. You will need 2-2 1/2 hours to go up,have a walk around, enjoy the spectacular views & get down unless you are an athlete. It did not help that it was already 35° when we started going up at 10.30 am but it was so worth getting to the top. So be warned it is better to go in the morning as early as possible. We arranged for the mini-bus to then drop us at Herculaneum but be warned there is no place to get drinks or food there apart from vending machines so take a picnic lunch or snack with you if you are going to do both places.

We arrived in the park at 9:00 and it opened late. The staff did not seem to mind. However, that was one minor hiccup. The climb to the crater is steep and the temperature continued to fall as we made our way to the top. The view of Naples below is beautiful. As we approaced the crater the smell of sulfur became ever present and steam spilled out of the vents. There are shops at the top of the crater that sell beverages, gifts. and Tears of Christ wine. If you have the time, I strongly recommend it.

We tacked this excursion (as a mature couple) onto our visit to Ercolano and really glad we did. The drive up is on a very good road and the walk up to the rim of the crater is on a well maintained path. If you leave about 90 minutes for a round trip and pace yourself you will not miss out on anything. You do not need any special clothing ( but use common sense) although closed in shoes are a must as it would be extremely irritating removing loose stones from your shoes. On our visit it was cloudy and cold one minute and clear the next but that is mountain climates. There are a couple of coffee shops at the top and very few people around at this time of year. Although it cost €10 a person it was worth it.

Really worth it on a clear day, not so worth it on an overcast day as when your at the top, you cant see the crater and you cant see Naples Bay. Not a particularly difficult walk, to the top it is about 5-10 minutes from the main tourist base car park, you won't need to be well drilled to get up there. If it starts to rumble though, my advice would be leave soon!
