“The highlight of our visit!”

Driving from Sorrento we took the autostrada exit of Terre del Greco. The signposting was good. There are horrible prefab chemical toilets at the car park, so better to stop in the bushes on the way up!
The parking was easy and cheap. The climb wasn't difficult but you should wear trainers, especially for the descent.
Brilliant views and an amazing experience, in fact this was the highlight of our 2 week visit to Sorrento.

“no information”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

going to mount vesuvius was a good experience and well worth the visit , the thing that really let it down for me and was the same for all the sites i visited in italy was a major lack of information , for the amount of money they charge and have made over the years you would have thought they could give you a information pack or information boards along the route , if you know nothing about the mountain before you go up you will still know nothing when you come down they cant even show you where pompei is from the top (although i did my research before hand )

“Very Cool!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2012

We drove from Sorrento and found it with no problems. Paid our 2,50 Euros to park at the top, paid out entrance fee and started walking....welll climbing really.

It is a walk that is like a very steep dirt road. Did I mention it is steep, people are stopped, looking at the view along the way....no they are really trying to catch their breath and maintain their pride!!

Take it slow and you should be fine, no rocks or anything to climb over just steep (you are climbing up a volcano).

There are tourist shops selling bottles of wine and trinkets at the bottom, top, and various points along the way. The views over the bay and Naples are incredible, well worth the climb. And looking in the volcano, well.... its dirt, light stink and steam. You have to do it to be able to say that you have climbed Mt. Vesuvius, check that one off the bucket list....

“Breathtaking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

Best to travel here out of season. The road up the volcano is apparently gridlocked in high season. We went in November and there was no traffic at all. The final walk from the carpark to the crater rim is quite strenuous and takes 20-30 minutes. Buses from the Circumvesuviana Pompeii Rail Station do not run out of season. There is however a taxi bus service. Make up a party of minimum 4 people and pay no more than Euro 15 per person (there are always other people waiting to make up a party) This service is only Euro 2 pp more expensive than the bus when you take the site entry fee into account.

“The climb killed me.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2012

Don't listen to the tour services who say its a 20 minute climb. It is not. I admit I have a health problem that makes climbing difficult but my friend is young and fit and she didn't make it in 20 minutes either. Once up it's a good view and looking into a volcano is always fun, however if you struggle with climbing then don't go with a tour group that only gives you an hour to get up, look round and come down again (as we did). Alternatively try Solfatara at Pozzuoli. You can walk on the crater and is not such a strenuous climb.
