“Wonderful Rooftop Bar”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Wonderful old classic hotel with lots of charm. Great location with many restaurants around. The rooftop bar provided amazing views of Capri and Vesuvius. Rooms were large and very comfortable. Staff was helpful.

This is a good hotel with old world charm in a great location. The area along the sea front offers great views as well as good places to eat on all budgets.

It felt very safe & on Sunday the road is closed to traffic & families hire bikes - come on roller skates - it was great fun.

Yes Naples is dirty in places & tough but with a few precautions we had a wonderful time & there are such treasures to see. We weren't hassled by beggars (unlike Rome or Milan) & we had a great time & will go back as 3 days wasn't enough.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the sea are a must.

We stayed for 5 nights at the Hotel Excelsior in September and it was fantastic. There is very little to add to the reviews below. Platinum members can opt for a free breakfast on the 7th floor that was great. They even included sparkling wine. The location was fantastic and we felt very safe walking in the promenade in the evening. The staff could not have been more helpful in directing us to anything we asked about.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to a suite and our corner room had four balconies, though they did not directly fac...

After hearing how Napoli could be a difficult visit, one could be a little apprehensive about the experience !
The best way to overcome that apprehension is to stay in good digs!
From the first moment of arrival you are treated to the calm of an historic structure carefully restored to it's full glory!
The lobby is a space of warmth and the reception is as warm!
When we were shown to our room on the 4th floor we were surprised at the good taste in the recent restoration. It all just fitted in!
Internet access was spot on, though at a cost, but not much!
Breakfast on the roof terrace was a delightful view over the Bay of Naples.
The check out we seamless and more pleasant service was delivered.
A nice experience for my first time in a problematic city.

Room Tip: High floor with a sea view and the 4th floor has been recently renovated to a high standard.

Arrived at 10 pm and was greeted with a wonderful front desk staff. Upgraded room overlooking Lungo Mare. Balcony and lights and warm weather was amazing. Bedroom was huge. Bathroom was very nice. Didnt have a chance to use steam/sauna room but impressive. Had a cocktail on balcony and soaked in the sights of Naples. Breakfast was very nice and outside on amazing patio. overall a wonderful experience....

For your sake, please read the Poor and Terrible reviews from fellow travelers for they are almost identical to my experiences. I only give it a Poor reviews because it was clean, safe and the location.

I stayed at this expensive hotel because of our poor hotel experience in Southern Calabria. It was the last night of my Wife's and I two week tour and I booked it through Amex Platinum travel where I was promised a room upgrade. If our room was an upgrade than I can only imagine the other rooms in the basement. The room was small, outdated, above the lighted hotel sign and the buses, taxi's, cars and scooters were an extra for the $100.00's I paid. The front desk insisted that is was the upgraded room and the hotel was booked, end of story!

Naples is a filthy, corrupt, crime ridden city that preys on unsuspecting and innocent tourists. We were warned by Italians when we were in Southern Calabria, which in itself is a hotbed of criminality not to leave anything of value in the hotel room, have nothing in your pockets and no purse, to have a backpack and all your valuables at the bottom of your backpack when you go out.

We did go out for a couple of hours stroll to see the city before dinner at the Fortress opposite the hotel. A few blocks from the hotel, there were Italian Tax Police on every corner, turning a blind eye to illegal Africans selling illegal goods on the opposite corner whereas if you bought some counterfeit item, the police would ask you for a receipt. When you couldn't produce one, the police would fine you and take the item, probably giving it back to the African after you left.

I'm a 50 something who grew up in Hell's kitchen in New York, been to slums and ghetto's and know a lot about petty thievery. Keeping distance, turning around often when walking not giving thieves time and chances, checking out reflections in glass windows, walking in the middle of the sidewalk and not next to buildings where you could be pulled in or tripped onto the street where a pickpocket helps you up, etc., but how someone can open the top zipper of a backpack of a 6'6" (2 Meters), 100 kilo, built man, with my wife next to me, checking the backpack every few minutes, is beyond me. It was the first and only time in my life where someone would foolishly try to rob me and Thank God for that Calabria advice for nothing was taken.

The dinner on the water at the Fortress was great.

We were here in June 2012 for 3 nights.
Great views and the rooms a fantastic fusion of old-n-new - very upscale!
There is a lovely fort right opposite that has loads of cafes, bars and restaurant.
Service was commendable!

Room Tip: Best rooms facing the jetty!
