We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior the night prior to leaving for our cruise from Naples, Italy. This is a beautiful old world hotel in a great location right on the water with exceptional views of Mt Vesuvius. The positives - had a great time on the terrace enjoying the sunset and sharing some snacks and wine with our friends. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms were updated. The negatives: a bit stuffy and somewhat pretentious. This hotel caters to celebrities and ultra wealthy and I felt a bit put off upon check in. The room rates were high so I had used Starwood points to book the rooms for me and our friends and there was definitely an attitude in the front desk manager (my husband actually noticed it first). Other staff were very nice and accommodating. Would I stay here again - probably not. But I am glad we at least tried it.

I and my wife stayed here 1 night and I'm surprised of the beautiful sea and castel view of the Hotel. The room was a balcony, was not too big and new but clean. The price was high but the Hotel is in the center and also the breakfast was good.

We wanted a spectacular view of Vesuvius, and this was the best! Our room looked directly across at the mountain, and fired our imaginations about the eruption in 79 A.D. It was the perfect base to explore the Archeological Museum, Pompeii and Herculaneum - and close to the ferry base for the trip to Procida. Lovely rooftop bar and wonderful breakfast buffet (included in room price) as well. Great value for money.

Room Tip: Room overlooking the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius is a "must"!

Our Italian adventure started in Naples, with a two night stay at the Hotel Excelsior. We had a beautiful room on the second floor of the hotel. From our room, we had a spectacular view of Mount Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and Castel dell'Ouvo. We found the hotel's location to be close enough to the major shopping/commercial areas, while being far enough away to maintain it's status as Naples most luxurious area. There are a lot of wonderful restaurants close by and some great places down by the Castel. You definitely have to take a walk down Via Partenope both during the day and at night. The nightlife along this area is fantastic! The hotel staff was very friendly and spoke strong English. We were disappointed that we had to pay for wifi, but that's our fault for not looking into it a little bit more closely before booking; but it did work well once we paid for it. No one told us breakfast was included in the price of our room, so we didn't take advantage of that on our first morning. Make sure you check with the front desk if you don't know because I did overhear another couple, who thought that breakfast was included, and only found out upon checking out that it wasn't. Even if you don't eat at the hotel, make sure you visit the rooftop terrace. We took some beautiful photos from there. As far as the ammenities in the room are concerned, the bed was a little hard for our liking, there were no face/wash cloths and no hair conditioner: none of which were deal breakers. It's always a treat for my 6'4" husband to have a shower that is over his head, so we were happy! I loved the lush fabric on the walls too! If we are ever lucky to travel to Naples again, we would definitely stay at the Hotel Excelsior! Don't listen to all the "hoo-ha" about Naples being unsafe. We were never concerned about that for one second!
PS: Visit Marino's for supper. It's a small, local restaurant one or two streets up from Via Partenope. It was one of the best, most authentic Italian meals we had on our entire trip!

This is an all around 4+ star hotel. Has all the amenities one can ask for including a spacious room, well appointed bathroom, helpful staff, somewhat clean overall but could use a dusting here and there, nice rooftop bar, and generally good overall experience. Concierge was the most helpful with great suggestions for local restaurants and things to do. It is a sound choice for a base in Naples, when visiting the Amalfi Coast or the surrounding areas. The hotel is close to touristy restaurants and historical sights however if you want a truly "local" experience you have got to travel about 15-20 min up the hill, concierge can make recommendations for that if one is willing to go... Area surrounding the hotel is not very safe. A lot of pick-pockets to watch out for, you often get harassed by street vendors trying to sell you god knows what, traffic in the area is absolutely insane which makes getting to and from the hotel by car or taxi pretty unpleasant. Overall good property but it's location is a definite down-side.
