Owner description: The Teatro di San Carlo was designed by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the monarch since Charles wanted a new and larger theatre for Naples to replace the old and dilapidated Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. On 12 February 1816 the San Carlo was destroyed by fire. The Theatre was re-designed by the architect Antonio Niccolini and rebuilt within ten months on order of King Ferdinand IV. In 1845 there was additional refurbishment and, by 1854, the theatre's interior appearance changed to the now-traditional red and gold. Now carefully restored to its former splendour, the San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe.

Amid the bustling, noisy streets of Naples, this quiet grand building is worth an hour of your time.

Definitely worth paying the €5 tour fee. The guide speaks excellent English and gives you a real flavour of the history and types of show the building has hosted.

In excellent condition, this is a beautiful building with lots of viewing boxes and comfy seats. The tour takes in the Royal Box too. Would be great to see a production here, as the acoustics and atmosphere must be amazing when it is full.

There can only be one Teatro San Carlo ... in the midst of Naples' chaos is this most perfect jewel of an opera house! ... Saw Rigoletto in May and will not soon forget how beautiful it all came together. Must see even if just to tour the unique architecture.

The tour was great. The guides english was excellent, and it was even nice listening in Italian to what she had to say. We were there on a Sunday, so not too many people on the tour. Beautiful place to see.

The theater is beautiful and within walking distance of our hotel (Palazzo Turchini). The intermission is VERY confusing as to where to get a drink and how. You have to go downstairs and get a ticket; it's not cash-paying purchase. There also were no subtitles in English so we didn't understand the opera, but they did sell a book with the libretto in English.

It was the most beautiful opera house I have ever been in. We saw Rigolletto and it was magical!! Would not miss this.
