the cemetery was scary but very interesting. We learned about it in the Lonenly Planet book and we decided to go there.
It's difficult to reach and we walked a lot inside Naples, in busy roads full of motorbikes and noises. it wasn't so bad and we didn't feel so bad.
The cemetery is full of skulls, you can find them everywhere, there was also a door made by skulls.
we found it very interesting.

This different Cemitery is located at a residencial area, after the Metro station you will have to walk a little bit. Its a surprise, you will see bones since 1800's.

We would have NEVER found this place if it wasn't for our friend who lived in Naples. It is in a hidden cave within a small town.

But it was really worth it and there are thousands of skulls lining the walls. The cave was a lot larger than I expected and the family displays were really cool to see.

A church and tombs carved into the rock - unlike any place I had been to before. Travel to Materdei Metro Station from where Fontanelli Cemetery is approx. 15 mins walk - downhill there, uphill back. You may need to ask in shops to check you're on the right track, but worth seeking out. Didn't see a collection box at the entrance - I'm sure many visitors would like to contribute towards the cemetery's upkeep.

This is a very impressive and moving sight. Although we were the only people there at the time, it felt as if we weren't alone! It was very creepy but such an interesting place to visit.

It is well off the beaten track in terms of tourism but I would say it is worth the effort to find if you have some spare time. We took a taxi through sheer laziness but you can walk it from Piazza Bellini (top end of Via Tribunali) in 20 minutes (if you know where you're going!).
