“impressive but very dodgy area”
Reviewed December 25, 2012 via mobile

I went in December 2012 to the fontanelle cemetery after having read on tripadvisor about it. The cemetery is uneasy to find and you should not follow the signs on the street as they have been turned and point in the wrong direction. BEWARE: a very nice and polite woman stopped us at the entrance of the area leading to the cemetery to warn us that the streets around there are very unsafe. The surrounding are indeed intimidating and people were looking at my partner with insistence while a group of young men on moto were constantly near us. Use caution, common sense and hide your belonging. That said it was worth going through the effort.

The cemetery itself is very impressive with thousand of bones carefully displayed and arranged. The place is both beautiful and eerie and is a haven for photographers. It is also a fantastic way to immerse yourself in napolitan culture. A must see if you have a bit of an adventurous spirit and are not scared by death.

“Hard to find but amazing”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

We almost have up finding this place as assumed we had taken the wrong turn, but the door is really not well signed posed. Just a plain steel door and then you are alone. It felt somewhat strange to be alone with all these skulls and personal memories that seems very recent in some instances.

I would really recommend this place....totally unique, very special and like no where I have been before. I almost want the tourist people to make more of it, and then I don't as it keeps it special and secret. It would not be the same atmosphere with a lot of people everyday. GO and visit.

“A zillion skulls and crossbones”
Reviewed December 6, 2012

This is an amazing place, full of centuries of skulls and crossbones of the many for whom there was no space in church graveyards. Eerie and dark, an historical unique place

“Creepy and Eerie but Well Worth the Visit”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

The place is hard to find, but just ask the locals and they will point you to the right place. Parking is also very limited. Otherwise it was neat to see and it is definitely worth the visit. Admission is free. It would have been nice to have some information posted, but info postings are scarce in Italy it seems.
