I dont think i will ever see anything like this again....it was very eerie and i left in amazment. I cant say i liked it as such as a cave full of skulls is not something to be liked....but.....wow!

We had learned about this place through tripadvisor and can highly recommend it to visitors.

This cemetary (which was actually carved into the rocks) was founded in the 15th century and used until 1969, when (according to some internet sources) the archbishop to Naples had put a ban on it.

The wide halls are filled with what have to be thousands of skulls and bones. Truly an impressive and at the same time a bit spooky sight...

Opening hours:
Monday and Tuesday,Thursday - Sunday, from 10.00 am to 5.00 p.m.
Wednesday: closed

When we phoned them, we were told that the visit was possible only in a group with a guide.
But it turned out that everyone can visit the cemetery every day, except Wednesday, absolutely free and without a guide (even if they tell you otherwise!!!).
Guided tours are conducted only once a week and cost 5 euro per person and must be booked in advance.
I listened to the tour conducted by Barbara in Italian and I should say that it was very interesting. She is a very good guide.
Without any doubt you must visit the Fontanelle Cemetry if you are in Naples.

Since the location is a bit off the track from Capodimonte - take a taxi. Very spiritual and beautiful

But because of the long time that has passed since the thousands of deaths, not as horrifying as say, the tower of skulls in the killing fields in Cambodia. Helpful leaflet in English. The shiny skull has clearly been varnished!
