I was terrified of the ferry trip from Split to Ancona due to TripAdvisor reviews. We purchased a two person berth, which reviews made sound terrible. Actually, it was almost a mini-cruise ship. A cafe, bar, restaurant - all with decent prices considering. Staff was friendly, the room was nice albeit no charging/electrical ports. There was no fan in the room and minimal air conditioning but it didn’t matter. I HATE sleeping in a hot room and I slept fine. The toilet and shower worked fine and the shower was actually the most consistent during my three country Euro trip. The beds were nice and there was plenty of room for the two of us.

So long as you remember it’s a ferry and not a cruise ship you’ll be fine and expectations will be met.

In order to not lose a sightseeing day during our recent Italy - Croatia vacation, we elected to take the SNAV ferry from Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia It worked out great. We were walk-on passengers, without a vehicle.

Here are my "lessons learned":

90 days prior to your ferry trip, go online and book your tickets. Book the highest priced cabin available so you'll be comfortable. There is a small number of these cabins, so get one and you won't regret paying the extra euros. Our cabin had a comfortable bed, WiFi, nice bathroom with a good shower. You'll want to wake up in Split fully refreshed and ready for action.

Early in the afternoon the day of your ferry ride, go to the ferry ticket office which is not at the Port Authority, but you can take the free bus 20 from the Port Authority building to get there and back. Check in at the ticket office and find out the earliest time you can board. SNAV gave us a "must board by" time of 19:00, but it turned out that hoards of people showed up at the same time, and stood in a long line at security checkpoint, which is a pretty thorough check. So if you can board early, do so. You can either stay on the ferry or leave and come back.

Once on board, go directly to the level where you'll find the reception desk - it was on level 7 for us. The elevators are really small (two people at a time with luggage) so expect you may have to wait in line at the elevator. At reception, you'll receive your room key.

Dinner onboard our SNAV ferry was excellent. We were two couples, and the waiter would not allow us to split the dinner 50/50 on two credit cards so be prepared to use Euros or decide if your friends are going to pick up the tab.

At the port in Split, we had arranged to hire a local driver to drive us to Dubrovnik. We booked his service online and prepaid it on Paypal. He is Denis from Solo Transfers (solotransfers.com) and I highly recommend him. If you are taking a taxi on arriving in Split, be prepared to get a supply of the local Croatian currency, the Kuna, to pay your driver.

Just know that the ferry is huge, holding hundreds of people. And it's a popular option for Italians to hop over to beautiful Croatia for a day.

We would definitely do this again, if we have the opportunity. Now that we know how to navigate the system...it should be a no-brainer.

We used these a few times. Fast service across to Ischia/Casamicciola. Overall good service. Cost is around 19€pp.
But be warned - even though as a visitor, you pay about 4x the residents price, this does not include a piece of luggage. So to visit the island you need to pay if you wish to bring luggage!
There is no sign at the ticket desk of this company to advise you of this - the result is getting yelled at and holding up the boarding line while you pay for your bag.
Residents also bring bags but I did note most of these had no bag ticket attached or presented.
I really think if they wish to encourage people to come and stay on Ischia and spend a few days as well as a few Euros, it would be smart to include a bag per person in the ticket price.

We took this ferry as part of our Cosmos Tour. This ferry also transports cars, trucks & buses. The accommodation was bright and clean with a small shower area. The restaurant was surprisingly good and inexpensive, with a bar with light meals and premium restaurant. People are allowed to bring pets on board. Pleasant cruise.
