“Rip off”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

this place sucks you in with barkers and promises of free gifts, and subjects you to high pressure sales tactics, constantly "up selling" you. The waiters are like car salesmen pushing the grilled fish at 55 euros a kilo. We asked for 250 grams for a taste. The waiter brought a whole fish at (he claimed) 1.6 kilos. We got into a dispute and I had to talk to the boss to settle it. They say Naples is treacherous and this was our exposure to it.

“Got suckered too, but had a good time”
Reviewed June 16, 2012

It was a cab driver who suckered us on 5 June, 2012. We thought we would take a cab to a pizzeria recommended by Rick Steves but the cabby persuaded us that it was a tourist trap and this place was where he went with his family and that the prices were reasonable. Well, the bill was over 160 euro for 5 people for lunch. Souvenir hot plate was offered and I think it was added to the bill but I (sucker) thought it was complementary. That being said, we did have an enjoyable lunch sitting next to a castle. We had 3 plates of appetizers (meats and cheeses that were unfamiliar to us - a good thing for me) and 3 pizzas and 4 beers plus sodas. So it was enjoyable and memorable - perhaps not a bad price to pay - maybe not so bad to be suckered some times. If you want to keep the cost down, just refuse the waiter's recommendations regarding appetizers and souvenirs and you may not come out so bad. One caveat, the VISA charge has yet to appear on my credit union account site as of today, 16 June. I will be vigilant.

“Horrible Experience and Ripped Off My Credit Card”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

The owner of our hotel in Sorrento mentioned this place to us. This place was very shady. They have no wine list so you have no idea how much you are going to pay for the wine. Food was horrible. Watery plate of pasta. They keep trying to push free "gifts" on you the whole meal. We left our decorated tile on the table and they came after us with it. We told them to stick it.
The worst part was the day after we ate at this place I started getting fraudulent charges appearing on my credit card for clothing stores in Naples for several thousand dollars. This was the only place in Naples that I used my credit card.

“Don't Fall for This Wallet-trap.”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

A cautionary tale. We are not suckers, but we were had over this time.

Castel dell'Ovo is surrounded by tourist-orientated restaurants, all at one another's throats. Oste Pazzo is not an exception. If you even glance at the menu board outside you are lured in by a glass of 'free' bubbly (but later the bill contains a 'Coperto' of course), and then your wallet is expertly filletted of its contents.

To be fair we did find a very decent bottle of Amarone lurking inside, and the price for that was reasonable at 50 euros. Otherwise some fairly ordinary fried fish stuff, one sweet, two coffees and one glass of Amaretto brought the whole bill up to 180.12 euros!

There are wonderful places to eat in Naples. Go and find one. If you are outside the Oste Pazzo you have not yet succeeded. We paid so that you can avoid having to do so....be grateful.

“Blatant rip-off!!”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

Unfortunately we recently had a meal in 'Oste Pazzo Ristarante' near the Castle dell'Ovo in Naples, Italy. I say unfortunate because had I read reviews on Tripadvisor prior to eating in this area of Naples I wouldn't have entertained eating in Oste Pazzo.

We were victims of the the very same fish scam that other reviews mention. When we were looking at the sandwich board outside, the waiter came over and even said jokingly 'if you don't like anything you dont have to pay for it'.
Whilst mulling over the menu the waiter suggested that we try the mixed fish appetiser starter which was a small taster dish - we went on his recommendation thinking that it was small and wouldn't be expensive. The waiter was also trying to push for us ordering lobster or fish for our main course - which we declined.
The mixed fish starter arrived very quickly, it was small dishes of squid, baby octopus, anchovies, and other fish on four plates. It wasn't very nice and we didn't eat much of it.
The main courses that we had from the menu were very average.

When we recieved the bill we were shocked to see that it was just short of €100! The fish appetiser dish was charged at €30. I questioned this with the friendly and pushy waiter who then became not so friendly saying that we never asked how much the appetiser was when ordering it. We reminded him about saying if we didn't like it we didn't have to pay for it - to which he replied that we had to pay for it or he would call the police.
After arguing our case we paid for the meal minus the starter and the service charge. The waiter wasn't very happy but couldn't argue as we had paid for our meal. We left Oste Pazzo feeling that we had been scammed, ripped off, and not very happy at all.
