Unfortunately we recently had a meal in 'Oste Pazzo Ristarante' near the Castle dell'Ovo in Naples, Italy. I say unfortunate because had I read reviews on Tripadvisor prior to eating in this area of Naples I wouldn't have entertained eating in Oste Pazzo.

We were victims of the the very same fish scam that other reviews mention. When we were looking at the sandwich board outside, the waiter came over and even said jokingly 'if you don't like anything you dont have to pay for it'.
Whilst mulling over the menu the waiter suggested that we try the mixed fish appetiser starter which was a small taster dish - we went on his recommendation thinking that it was small and wouldn't be expensive. The waiter was also trying to push for us ordering lobster or fish for our main course - which we declined.
The mixed fish starter arrived very quickly, it was small dishes of squid, baby octopus, anchovies, and other fish on four plates. It wasn't very nice and we didn't eat much of it.
The main courses that we had from the menu were very average.

When we recieved the bill we were shocked to see that it was just short of €100! The fish appetiser dish was charged at €30. I questioned this with the friendly and pushy waiter who then became not so friendly saying that we never asked how much the appetiser was when ordering it. We reminded him about saying if we didn't like it we didn't have to pay for it - to which he replied that we had to pay for it or he would call the police.
After arguing our case we paid for the meal minus the starter and the service charge. The waiter wasn't very happy but couldn't argue as we had paid for our meal. We left Oste Pazzo feeling that we had been scammed, ripped off, and not very happy at all.

We have just returned from the 'Oste Pazzo Ristarante' opposite the Royal Continental Hotel near the Castle dell'Ovo in Naples, Italy. This restaurant is situated right at the end of a lane on the left, adjacent to the sea. We arrived at the restaurant to be 'rail-roaded' into a meal there. We looked briefly at the menu on a sandwich board with average prices of between 10 and 20 euros for main courses.
We decided to eat there having been assured by the staff that we would have a great meal...

We sat down and were asked if we would like water which we ordered. Nothing wrong with the that!. The difficulty came with the wine.... no wine list.....we then were treated to the waiter telling us how good a Pinot Griogio wine was at a cost if 26 euros. Having eaten in restaurants in the area where 13 euros was average we thought this appeared to be a bit over the top... he then amazingly offered another Pinot Grigio at a mere 20 euros. (At this point we should have left.) However, we are nice people and we like to give the benefit of the doubt. So imagine my surprise with still no wine menu the waiter appeared with a totally different bottle of wine still at 20 euros. (We should have walked.....) Thinking this was was too much effort to leave and start all over again we reluctantly agreed on the 20 euro Pinot Grigio.
Rather than offer us a menu in spite of several requests. He recommended a medley of fish as a starter that two American women in the restaurant (the only other diners) were also having. We took his recommendation which then appeared incredibly within 2 minutes. Even my wife as a fantastic cook cannot magic this one......
The eating experience of this magical starter was pretty average, but we still did not know the cost of this to which we both started guessing just how much this would be...
We both came to the conclusion that a figure of over 40 euros would be excessive for the whole meal. So imagine our surprise when the whole meal of one starter & one bottle of wine came to the incredible amount of 62.20 euros!
My wife & I have eaten in many restaurants around the world & the cost doesn't worry us too much. However, we do not like to be 'ripped off!'
Although, we complained and asked to speak to the manager/owner the waiter said neither were available. I dread to think what the two American women were about to be charged as they looked rather worried by this time.
AVOID UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF!

A group of 10 English friends wandered in to the marina on Sunday Feb 26th 2012 to see what was there and we were glad we did. We spent 3 hours in this little restaurant and had a fantastic time. The family made us very welcome and served us great food and wine whilst we watched two English football games which they were happy to find and let us watch. Three generations of the owning family watched and cheered the games with us and it felt like we were with friends.

We ate, drank Peroni and many bottles of the house wine whilst the family had their lunch also.

Yes they are salesmen as well as restauranteurs but if you decline the fish which by the way they did not push on to us and make your own choices firmly but friendly then this place is good. Yes we also found it odd there was no wine list but the bill was reasonable for 10 and we were not overcharged. Very friendly and I would go again, but that said I had my Napoli shirt on maybe my buddies and I had special treatment.

As a group of British tourists spending a few days in Naples we felt the area around Castel Dell Ovo was one of the safest in town and decided to venture there for a meal. There was a PR guy on the causeway heading to the castle promoting Oste Pazzo so we thought we'd give it a try. It was a damp night and still quite cold (it was February!) and we were seated in the outside area which was sheltered by a 'lean to' tent with patio heaters even though the restaurant was quiet. As we were a large group we thought we were put outside in case we were too noisey to be seated inside. The waiters were attentive and the prices seemed reasonable. There was no wine list, which I thought was strange so just ordered a bottle of house wine. When the bill came we were charged 45 euros for 3 starters and they added an extra starter for 5 euros we didn't receive. The house wine was 25 euros a bottle and we were charged a cover charge for all our party even though not everyone was dining. When we politely challenged the bill, the staff became very agitated and aggressive. I asked to speak to the Manager and was told he didn't speak English so had to negotiate with 2 intransigent waiters. Although the food was good, we felt completely ripped off, we had not received the dishes we ordered and they were clearly using the language difference as the reason for the price discrepancy. If you're happy to pay 25 euros for a bottle of house wine and 90 euros for 3 calamari starters, and be seated in a tent, then go for it. From our experience, there are far better value restaurants in the area, with better views and more honest staff, who don't need a PR guy to bring in the customers. The other restaurants around the Castel Dell Ovo were far better and the staff were lovely - try Transatlantico or Ciro, for better views and honest, friendly staff.
