Description: The restaurant, in the heart of the ancient Naples offers a rich menu from the traditional Neapolitan cuisine; the atmosphere is really relaxing and the place, with its elegant lines and features, is really nice. After all, Neapolitan cuisine is famous and beloved, like Neapolitan songs all over the world. "We love what we do!"

“Avoid Calamari”
Reviewed October 2, 2011

My husband enjoyed his pasta dish but my fried squid was overcooked although the fried shrimp had a good flavour. The server was friendly and efficient & the atmosphere was fine but it is a very small place. Main advantage is proximity to Hotel Piazza Bellini - left as you leave the hotel, go one block & around the corner. It was very hard in five days ro find a good restaurant in the city,

We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel (Hotel Bellini), who said that it was an inexpensive but authentic Neapolitan restaurant.

Upon first impressions, the price appeared reasonable on the menu posted outside, so not a second thought was given before entering and sitting down. The waiter was pleasant enough and went through the trouble of explaining what things were not available on the menu.

Before ordering, we were given a plate of fried dough balls, which were decent enough.

We ordered a starter of sauteed seafood, a seabass cooked with tomatoes and a seafood risotto. Each dish was priced at a reasonable 12 euros each. We also had a half liter of white wine and a bottle of water.

The sauteed seafood portion was absolutely anemic, but not bad.

The risotto portion was also small, even for italian standards and oversalted, as a dish from Tuscany would be (to make up for the region's traditionally unsalted bread).

The seabass was unscaled. Now, I don't know if this is traditional Neapolitan tradition to cook fish unscaled, but even the cheapest restaurants in my experience has not forgone this step.

The wine was unremarkable, neither good nor bad.

As the meal went on, we began to notice that all the patrons were tourists. It is my suspicion that the hotel likely recommends this restaurant either because they have a special relationship or out of simple convenience (as it is literally located around the corner).

Although we ultimately did not feel that the food was bad, it was merely adequate. The bill was accurate(it came to 45.50 euros), although the food was, for the portion size and quality, overpriced. Although we visited Naples in August when many businesses are on vacation, we would not recommend this restaurant and would not patronize it again as there are plenty of other restaurants even in August that are of much better value.

“Nice little place. Good food. Great value.”
Reviewed July 18, 2011

I would never have noticed this place but had read about this in Rough Guide so decided to give it a go. It's quite a small place and was pretty quiet when we went (although we did eat early). The waiter (and later, the waitress) were really pleasant and helpful, recommending dishes and wine (and not just the more expensive ones - in fact the waiter insisted that the house wine was pretty good). The food was excellent. We shared the antipasti de la Carmela as a starter, meal in itself but it was magnificent. I definitely recommend this place and would go back on a return visit to Naples.

“Yes, it is possible to have a terrible meal in Italy!”
Reviewed May 17, 2011

The clerk at our hotel (Hotel Piazza Bellini) recommended this restaurant to us, although there appeared to be several nicer ones nearby. Not sure what that was about--although the clerk did tell us Da Carmela was inexpensive. Well, it wasn't all that inexpensive. It was crowded though, filled with the German tourists from our hotel. It seems the hotel and the restaurant have a special relationship.

First, we ordered the vegetable plate--not a lot of veggies for the price and overly-oily. Menu has an extremely limited selection. They didn't have what I ordered (spaghetti with clams) so they brought me mussels instead and claimed that was what I ordered. (Impossible, as I have always disliked mussels after getting sick on them years ago and would certainly never order them!) They finally brought me some grilled squid--like rubber. (every other place I've ordered this dish has been wonderful) My husband's fish was equally inedible. It was just a bad, terrible, no-good meal right from the start. In Italy!

Earlier we'd stopped in a bar/deli for lunch (wish I could remember the name of it--on the way from the train station to the Archaeological museum) Standing before the case, picking out one well-prepared and delicious dish after another--veggies, salads, stews, etc--we didn't know this would be the best meal we'd find in Naples. And at half the price of our dinner!

We've been to Italy three times and have eaten many meals all over the country. This was our final night during our trip to the Amalfi Coast and our only night in Naples. Such a shame to have wasted it on this dreary place.
