We hiked three mountains while in the Naples area including Mt. Vesuvious, Positano and the walk of the gods, and Mt. Epomeo. Our favorite and most rewarding by far was Mt. Epomeo! The feeling you got when you finally reached the top was exciting. Not only for the views, but just for the hike and the camaraderie along the way. The hike is a little strenuous, but if you are n pretty good shape, it is a good workout!

We just did this hike the day after Christmas. The restaurant at the top is closed in Winter, so pack a picnic. There are steep portions, and few 10M stretches with uneasy footing, but overall an easy 3km hike from Fontana. Luckily Bar Epomeo was open in Fontana so we got one large and delicious Capuccino before hopping on the the bus back. Easy to catch the CD bus from Ischia Porto and the CS back. We hopped off in Ischia Ponte when saw signs for the Castello Aragonese.

Monte Epomeo is the highest tip of the Island of Ischia, you can climb the side of the mountain which is soooo easy,( so if you're not used to climbing, you will find this easy as long as you are normally fit.)
At the top is a lovely rustic resturant run by a lovely friendly family. They cook the Ischian rabbit,(Also other food) which is only found on this island, it is truly gorgeous.
The views are breathtaking, if you do anything you must do this little adventure.
Happy times
1)Wear good walking shoes, do not wear flip flops, 2)Take some water.3) Enjoy the food at the top.4) Take your camera 5)Start in the morning.

We get up at 4 am, take a taxi to Serrara Fontana and after leaving the car we stars climbing to the mountain. It was absolutely dark but possible to orient. It took about 30 min from the special path beginning to get the top where we had met a sunrise that was interesting and romantic. After this we come down along the beautiful forest, had a nice walk in it and come beg to Fontana but it was possible to go down to Forio o to other directions- ask a map of walking path in your hotel. It was really enjoying adventure. Don’t forget to take something warm – it’s quite cold and windy on the top. There is a restaurant with a good view almost on the top but it was closed because of the very early time – take something to eat and drink with you. It’s recommended adventure for young and active people!

I hiked from the village of Fontana to Forio over the top of Monte Epomeo. The hike was thoroughly enjoyable, a refreshing change of scene from the hustle and bustle of urban Italy (including Porto on Ischia). The view from the peak was absolutely spectacular. The hike down to Forio passes through some lovely Mediterranean woodland past ancient cave dwellings. Continuing through the rustic hills above Forio you will enjoy wonderful views of the west coast of Ischia while walking past vineyards and orchards.
