“Amazing food, wonderful staff, hidden gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

Capri left a bad taste in my mouth on my first visit because it was so stinking touristy. The food was so bland, carelessly prepared, and over priced. But this last trip, we found Il Tinello and it changed my entire perception of the whole island! Hidden (seriously hidden) down not just one, not two, but several back alleys, it takes a determined traveler to find it. You'll be so happy that you did! The wine was so reasonably priced (13-17 Euro each for an Aglianico and Greco di Tufo - both very good) and the selection of Campania wine was pretty good.

The frutti di mare was by far the best dish that we ordered. I find that often in Naples and the touristy parts of the Amalfi Coast, the frutti di mare is overcooked so often that it loses all the flavor. This one was perfect! Shrimp, mussels, clams, octopus - everything was very well prepared. We also got the "big gnocchi" if for nothing else than that the name was hilarious and it was the chef special.

Strongly support your blowing off the chains and generic Italian in the larger streets and wander back to Il Tinello. Our waitress was sweet, spoke English well but found our broken Italian not overly irritating and thus responding in kind.

“Nice meal, very expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013 via mobile

We came to the restaurant for lunch after reading about it on trip adviser. We were the only one in the restaurant although it was very busy on the island. The lady was very welcoming, the menu was in italian and we struggled with it, but between us we managed to choose few dishes to sample the dishes of Capri. We chose bruschetta to start, 2 pasta dishes, 2 main of fish of the day, fried calamari and prawns, salad (tomato and lettuce) and fries. We drank 1/2 bottle of wine and soft drinks for the our 2 boys. We also had 3 deserts. The dishes were very good, but not large portions, the fish was very small and there were only few prawns and calamari. Both pasta dishes were not generous, they were with meat and fish respectively, we found it hard to find them!
The deserts were heavenly. The bill was a shock, 175 euros.
We didn't think it was worth it, not even for an expensive place like Capri. Hence the 3 babbles.

“One of the best choices on Capri”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012 via mobile

Reading the positive reviews on TripAdvisor, I selected Il Tinello - and I concur with the general conclusion: this is a must-visit place when you have had enough of pizza & pasta without wanting to burn a bigger hole in your wallet.

To find it, I had to look for and follow the signs leading to the restaurant.
It is well-hidden and a rather small place - 7 or 8 tables - with a pleasant atmosphere even without windows.

Next to the usual dishes on their regular menu, they have a daily one.
The starters and main courses, written in Italian, were perfectly explained by the (male) waiter in English.

I opted for two specials: delizia di tonno, and gamberetti sale e pepe con aglio.

My starter was a subtly prepared tuna salad on a slice of a large tomato, served with bread.
Delicious!

The main course was shrimps: so fresh it melted in my mouth, cooked in oil, peppers (so somewhat spicy) and garlic. A winning combination!

Since I spent quite some time cleaning these shrimps, I struck a conversion with the waiter and was informed that Italians eat these without going through all this trouble: only head and tails are removed.
A tip for next time.

Since the main course was rather light, I had room for dessert: torta marosita alle nocciole.
As a distant chocolate-lover, I immensely enjoyed this local treat!

I was also impressed with the speed the courses were served. This is definitely a well-organized restaurant that valies its customers.

The price?
A neat 31 euro (including a bottle of water). That is almost a bargain on Capri!

“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2012

Following excellent reviews on TA we went out of our way to find this place. Not easy to find but well worth the effort. Is very small with only seven tables. We arrived to a full house however as we were staying for two days we booked for the next evening. We ate earlier than the Italians normally do so other than two other tables we were on our own. The food was exceptional with the opportunity to try dishes a little different from the normal pasta/pizza range. The owner provided exceptional service and the restaurant deserves to be included in the top ten restaurants in Capri.

“This is a true small trattoria.”

The food was very good and the local white wine was great. Our service was wonderful and the menu was just enough choices.
