“Not lively in September, but central and nice enough”
Reviewed October 28, 2013

You could almost imagine the lively scenes in the lobby from long ago. The hotel is situated in the heart of Capri, near everything. We got a very good rate in September, and the hotel seemed pretty empty. The room was large with everything you could need, and the breakfast buffet was standard and just fine. Next time, we might try somewhere with a bit more life, but again, probably was just the timing of our visit. I will say that the hotel staff at the front desk were on the unhelpful side, not offering anything up when we asked for dinner reservations other than to say that there was only one restaurant with an ocean view...(not so). When we asked them to break a large euro note, we were told we would have to wait (as the head guy was standing in front of the cash register talking to a local - 2 feet away - and couldn't be bothered.

Perhaps it's because it's end of season and they either don't have enough staff, or can't be bothered any more. Our group was one of many, and though I loved the location (4 mins from the main piazza) and the rooms, their service, breakfast and food /drinks service overall was not even average.

The rooms are great - my inside one was spacious and quiet, with a little terrace and chairs, what amounted to a dressing/ luggage alcove and spacious bathroom, well appointed. Reception and housekeeping staff were excellent and very helpful. Pity food/beverages is so bad.

The corridors are wide and gracious, and there are large areas all around to gather or just sit- the bar has groovy furniture, which looks great but is weird to try and relax in. Better is the large terrace out front with terrifically comfortable chairs and comfy sofas and tables. But the big flaw with all this is the servic. Or rather, lack of same. Think Keystone Kops or Manuel from Fawlty Towers. Very nice and friendly, but completely inefficient. Forget about the idea of being served on. The terrace - I had to go and unearth someone. Ok, he brought the drinks. Did he return to see if we needed a refill? Nope. Later the same evening it took them 15 minutes to get someone a beer! 15 minutes? And dinner was no better - an hour before our first course arrived. Which was absolutely great pasta - but too long to wait an hour after you've sat down before you get anything at all to eat.

There seemed to be a complete lack of coordination or system - kind of anything goes. It got even worse at breakfast - the breakfast - such as it was - had been largely eaten already by earlier guests. OK, no cereal? decided to have toast instead. forget it. the toaster didnt work. The idea of outting up a sign to say this hadn't dawned, so person after person tried to get it to work, failed and then had to find someone to ask how... only to be told it didn't. The fruit bowl had only a few substandard and unappealing pieces of fruit left. Bad luck for us, it seemed, as there was no attempt to replenish supplies; the staff spent their time clearing relaying places (so more people could not be fed?) overall, think 2-star motel standard at best.

Utterly unimpressed, and doubt I'd stay there again unless there was no alternative.
I expected better - much better! And was very disappointed.

Perfect location. Right in the middle of town and only about a 15 minute walk to the beach. The hotel itself is nice too but it's really the location that makes this place so great. I would absolutely stay here again!

The staff were very good the Hotel is lush and beautiful however if you get a room facing the back the view is pretty bleak. The housemaids were exceptional and the best I've ever come across in all of my travels - They deserve a raise :)

I would recommend this hotel it's central to everything and next door to the best Gelato in the world....

We will definitely be back to stay..

Just stayed one night at La Palma. Room was large and clean. The concierge was wonderful. He spent a while trying to get my WIFI working and was very helpful in general especially when he drew a map for us as far as where we had to meet the hydrofoil back to Naples. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. Hotel La Palma is not a resort as are some of the hotels on Capri, but its location can't be beat.

We loved stepping out of the hotel and being in the middle of the action, with the "Rodeo Drive" of Capri right there. The hotel is just gorgeous, with beautifully and comfortably appointed rooms as well as a great lounge/lobby area to hang out and people watch. The front desk was always helpful with any requests. The only slight inconvenience was that the wifi signal was really weak in our room, but we didn't mind hanging out in the lounge at all.

It's a bit pricy, but no more so than everything else on Capri. The common areas look great, but the room furnishings could use an update -- what's in the room is old and tired, and what's on the balcony is cheap and rickety. Our room had a walk-in closet and a roomy bathroom, but the door to the luxuriant 5-head shower (wow!) didn't seal properly, which meant stepping out onto a saturated bathmat.
The staff wasn't particularly friendly, but the service was okay. Typical Mediterranean breakfast buffet included cereals, breads, cold cuts, cheeses, jams, fruit, boiled eggs, coffee and juices, with hot breakfast available to order.
The restaurant, bar and patio area are comfortable and nice, and there is a lively piano bar in the evening with a talented entertainer doing sing-alongs, etc. in several languages. I woke up at 3 a.m. and stepped out onto the patio for a smoke, and was surprised to find that they were still singing and laughing it up downstairs. As soon as I stepped back inside and closed the double-pane patio doors, it was dead quiet.
The location is hard to beat; right in the middle of town with lots of incredible stuff within easy walking distance.
Right next door is the acclaimed Buonocore Gelateria/Pasticceria/Rosticceria, where they serve "the best gelato in Capri" in fresh waffle cones made right before your eyes. You can smell the waffle cones and the pastries from halfway down the block. There's no view to speak of (just the street below and the little piazza), but that's the trade-off for being in the town center. We were just there for the weekend to meet up with some friends, so the view wouldn't have been a selling point for us anyway.

I chose the Hotel La Palma because I was making fairly last-minute reservations and they were about the only one in the area that still had a room available for under $1000 a night. All in all, I wasn't displeased, but for $400, I was hoping for better than okay. In similar circumstances, I'd stay there again, but with a bit more advance planning, I'm sure I could get more bang for my buck.
