“Beautiful Public Areas, Small Expensive Room”
Reviewed October 1, 2011

I stayed 10-11 Sept 2011 in room 36 (single bed) at EUR155/night incl b/f booked direct with hotel.

Hmm. This review needs to be in 2 sections. The pool, gardens and public areas are beautiful and I really enjoyed the ambiance of the place - it was a tropical oasis. I enjoyed eating breakfast alongside the pool in the morning sun. Just perfect. The grounds are kept in perfect condition. The staff were extremely couteous, friendly and helpful - everyone from the lovely breakfast lady to the 2 housekeeping ladies - each time they saw a guest they greeted them cordially. Most of the guests were German when I was there - all the staff had good knowledge of English and German.

My single room was small and pokey and the furniture old. The bathroom flooded each time you had a shower in the 1mx1m cubicle. I hate when the shower curtain sticks to you while you are showering and you peeling it off your back etc. You had to use your available towels to mop the water. This room would be worth no more than EUR65-75 in any other city of Italy - but being Capri they have the cheek to charge EUR155.

That said, I enjoyed my day by the pool - albeit it is annoying that you can only use the pool from around 10.30 to 6 - you cant even lie by the pool out of hours as it is roped off. Some guests like to get up early and go for a dip (like me) so for my EUR155 I cant even do that and its too far down to Marina Piccola for a swim at the (public) beach before breakfast.

A few other annoyances - my air con kept cutting out and I had to ring Reception 3 times to reset the switch. The TV was hard to operate - I followed the instructions but to no avail. In the end Reception advised I had to press some weird combination which was not on the instruction card. On my 2nd day HSK didnt leave me any new towels - I had to get from Reception.

Location - Villa Sarah is in a very quiet part of town, approx 15 mins uphill from the main Piazetta. This is not far BUT when its 30 degrees plus and you do it 3 or 4 times a day - from the beach, from shopping, from dinner - it really annoys you - and forget any high heels - you will kill yourself on the way down the cobble stone hill. Better to stay closer to Piazetta in my opinion. The GOOD side is that there is a small supermarket just 50m from Villa Sarah (at the crossroad of V. Tiberio/V. Sopramonte) for drinks, groceries etc (closed Sundays).

In my opinion, Hotel Luna & Hotel La Tosca have the best views and location for being in Capri - if you can stay around that location you will be better off in the heat. In fact, after my stay at Villa Sarah, I spent another 5 nights at Tosca for EUR100 a night - and while Tosca does not have a pool and spacious public areas, it was much much better value for money all round.

All in all, would I stay again? YES but not at EUR155 per night. Not worth that much.

I found this hotel very nice and cheap however it is a bit cramped as the pool is directly attached to the eating area so it is annoying to eat with people are splashing around. You are also only allowed to use it from 11 until 2 then from 4 until 6. And even then you can't splash or make a sound. It is quite far from the centre and has a 15 minute uphill walk from the centre. Don't let this put you off if you want to slim down for summer!

We liked everything about this hotel. The location is excellent, far away from the thick crowds that unfortunately, in my opinion, constistute the only drawback of this spectacularly beautiful island.

I really cannot understand the bad reviews, but then again travelling is a very subjective experience.

The hote has a pleasantly designed pool area, and we found the staff to be very accomodating. Room size was also ok.

The price, like everything on else on Capri, is well above what one would pay elsewhere.

We stayed at the Hotel Villa Sarah for five nights in August. First and foremost, definitely have the porters at the docks handle your luggage. It's well worth the money, as this hotel is quite a hike up a hill, especially if it's as hot as it was when we were there. Hotel itself can be quite peaceful and lovely. We chose it because of it's distance from the town and hoped it would be quiet, as my husband was recuperating from heart surgery. Bedroom and bath (we had a superior upstairs with lovely view) were immaculate and very good size. The staff was extremely helpful, the breakfast quite good and the grounds impeccable. Being able to order from a small menu during the day is a nice feature. There is a nice pool, however, that is the only complaint we actually have. About two days into our relaxing and quiet holiday, when all the guests were respecting each other at the pool and everyone was enjoying themselves swimming, reading and napping, two young children arrived, whom we believed to be related to the owners. Once they hit that pool, they began screaming constantly, and they had no parental or Grandparental reprimands. (We discovered that on numerous occasions in Europe this summer!) It made our time by the pool unbearable and one-by-one, you could see the guests beginning to retreat to their rooms. The children were also allowed to run rampant throughout the lobby, which has all hard surfaces, so their voices echoed throughout the entire hotel. Not pleasant or enjoyable! We didn't complain, since they were not guests, but rather relatives, so instead we decided to just cut our time short there by one night. Would we return to Villa Sarah, probably not! Would we return to Capri, definitely yes! But we would chose a hotel closer to town, possibly even in Anacapri, where it is a bit more reserved and less hectic. We did discover some great restaurants, with Edode being the best by far!

Had a wonderful 4 day stay in June 2008 before going to Amalfi. The hotel was recommended by an Italian friend.
First things first, it goes without saying that the first lesson you learn (if you have never been) on Capri is HAND YOUR BAGS OVER TO THE PORTERS at the quayside when you get off the ferry. Whilst it might seem chaotic, it is a tried and tested system that has been in place for years and it works. Your bags will almost certainly be at your hotel before you are. It doesn't cost much. I was amazed by the number of Americans (and a few English) getting hot and bothered about holding onto their bags and loading them into taxis. They would then have had to drag them up the steep hills to their hotels - not a good idea - the porters and their electric buggies are there for a reason.
Villa Sarah is a good walk up the hill (on the way to Villa Tiberius) - the upside is that it is away from the madness and crowds that swarm around town (and the hotels on Via Tragara), the downside is that if you are elderly or overweight (or in heels), it is a tiring walk in the heat. And don't even THINK about dragging your bags up there.
We had the best rooms (upstairs at the end of the corridor with windows on both sides and the spectacular view) - ask for them. The rooms on the ground floor or at the back don't have a view, but are cheaper) The hotel is restrained and simple, set in lovely gardens where fruit is grown (and eaten at breakfast). Whitewashed and clean. Rooms are elegant with good linen and nice tiled bathrooms Caprese style (i.e. slightly more fussy and roccoco than you wood choose at home) - in the main though, they are blue and white only. There is a very grand entrance gate and walkway up to the hotel and a small but beautiful pool to plunge into after the walk up from town. The various members or staff (we assumed were the family owners) were supremely helpful in reserving dinner and checking boat times - nothing was too much trouble. The rest of the hotel clientele were Italians, French and English. No ghastly shouting Americans (the wrong kind, there are nice ones too). A little spoken Italian by the guests is hugely appreciated.
Breakfast is simple and fresh and straightforward - the system is that you order eggs cooked how you like from the waitress (the hardest-working person in the hotel). To those that have complained in older postings, this isn't some ghastly conference centre hotel with an enormous buffet breakfast catering to overweight, lap-top totting Americans who have no concept of over-consumption or waste. Coffee is passable (they could do better).
As always on Capri, the smart thing to do is go walking (or down to the beach clubs) during the day, avoiding the town centre. Once the crowds have gone in the evening, dress up in all your linen finery for cocktails at the Quissisana (or the Punta Tragara, or in the Piazzetta) before tottering off for dinner and tottering to the Piazetta for the all important digestivo.
Villa Sarah is very good value for what it is. Room choice is key if you want the view (which is the reason to come to Capri really).
We are spending a little (a lot!!) more money and trying the Casa Morgano this year (although will have other friends at the Villa Sarah) and will report back.
