We chose Hotel la Badia as our base on a Riviera Travel week long tour of the area. We knew we would have a packed itinerary which would leave us little time in the hotel. We paid for, and were given, a room with a magnificent view across the Bay of Naples, flanked by the local hills and opposite Vesuvius. It was everchanging and a delight to wake up to in the morning and to look at, with illuminated cruise ships nearby, in the evening. The room was spotless and well looked after every day. It was a bit smaller than we are used to (many of them were monks' cells from when it was an abbey) but it did not detract from the key issues of sleeping and showering (etc) in the good sized bathroom (without a bath, which we seldom use even at home). The staff were all friendly, helpful and entertaining, especially Antonio, the maitre d', and his restaurant staff. The food was generally good and plentiful and the staff were happy to offer alternatives on the occasion when some of the group did not enjoy their choice. Vegetarian and wheat/gluten free options were available at every meal without fuss. Short and acceptable wine list and a bar for post-prandial drinks (only limoncello for us, but it was so good!), as well as tea and coffee when needed during the day. I would happily return to la Badia and recommend it.

Room Tip: Sea view is worth paying for

Stayed at the La Badia, Lovely cosy hotel, the most marvelous view from our terrace across
Naples bay To the Vasuvius volcano, just breath tacking. good position for reaching Sorrentto by way of zig zag path.but far enough from the madding crowd.
I would recommend the La Badia everytime.

Room Tip: Choose room No 7 its on the ground floor, but in an elavated position with the added sun terrace.

Went with Riviera Travel the second week in October when the weather was still warm. After being welcomed by a thunderstorm by the time we arrived at La Badia the weather had changed. We had a warm welcome and shown into our room, which was very pretty but very compact (no room for our two cases!!) but a stunning view across the bay. We asked if we could upgrade, and were told we could do so 2 days later when larger rooms would be free, and we could choose which we wanted. Well, after being shown the suite, there was no contest! and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Being on the corner of the hotel we had views all over the bay and over to Vesuvius and beyond. We didn't go on all the tours provided as we needed to relax after a very busy few months, so enjoyed the hotel and Sorrento itself more than our fellow travellers. It was good to spend time around the pool, especially after walking back from Sorrento which took about twenty minutes from the centre. The meals were very acceptable, and Antonio and staff made them very enjoyable! A very friendly atmosphere, and nothing was too much trouble for our hosts (especially when the loo seat came off, it was replaced within the hour!) So with the small difference in the price we would certainly recommend room 10bis, and we hope we will return again sometime. From Eira Walter

Room Tip: As stated, our first room, room 20 was very cosy, this was on the second floor but 10bis was excelle...

Recently returned from a week's stay at La Badia-again with Riviera Travel. We had paid extra for a sea view , but, I did email the hotel about a week before to request a large room, if possible. We were not disappointed-Room 33-down a small flight of steps, but, there is a lift albeit quite slow !
Overall, La Badia is a sound, safe choice. Good location with stunning views-the walk into Sorrento is fine and just at the base of the hill is a small supermarket which is popular with the locals. Okay, it's a steep walk back uphill , but, there are plenty of "breathing " stops and wonderful views to drink in !
Our room was fine-plenty of wardrobe space, firm bed and large bathroom with bidet-no bath, just a smallish shower with nasty plastic curtain which wanted to cling to your body ! The towels closely resembled sheets but did the job-fresh every day along with soaps and shampoo-no shower caps, writing paper, sewing kits or the like. There is a safe in the wardrobe.
Considering there is such a large Brit clientele I really think the hotel could provide more English speaking TV channels or DVD facilities-just imagine watching " Spartacus " or " Gladiator" with Vesuvius in the backdrop ! Also, take your travel kettle if you enjoy a morning cuppa ! Also some hotel & tourist information in the room would have been appreciated.
The food is fine-breakfast consists of ham, cheese, salami, hard boiled eggs, fruits, Atcereals, breads, cakes, tea , coffee. At breakfast , you have to choose your evening meal which is always 3 courses . Soup or possibly pasta to start then a choice of 3 mains-always vegetarian option and often fish which was really nice. Desserts were somewhat disappointing-a tasteless sponge or fruit-go for the fruit option ! Service is brisk-bottled water is 2 Euros and house wines start about 11 Euros. You run up a tab and pay before departing-cards are accepted.
Staff are very helpful and friendly-there is a computer behind reception I could access to find out the World Cup Rugby results.
All in all ok-now if you want to know about Riviera travel that's another story !!!

Room Tip: Email ahead if you have any special requests-Room 33 is fine !

Like many of those who have reviewed this hotel, we spent a week at La Badia on a Riviera Travel tour. We chose it on the basis of reviews and because of its secluded position away from (but easily accessible to) the town, and we were not disappointed. Our room was small, but the views were stunning! Right across the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius directly opposite; the dawn sky was certainly worth waking for. A similar view was ours from the terrace where dinner was served each evening; we were fortunate to have summer weather in the first week of October. The staff, especially the head waiter and the proprietor and her colleagues on reception, were unfailingly charming and helpful. The hotel is set on a hillside above Sorrento, surrounded by olive groves where it is possible to sit and read in the autumn warmth, while a footpath leads down to the city centre in ten minutes or so... maybe more on the way back! The few negative criticisms are insignificant and possibly unfair to make of a three-star hotel: the food was a little bland and unexciting (though it improved as the week went on, especially with the Gala Dinner); the bathroom though clean was basic and provided with simple thin towels and few toiletries, and there was little provision for storage besides the wardrobe, Had we been telly-addicts, or confined to the room by bad weather, the lack of English-language TV might have been frustrating. But nothing to spoil a wonderful holiday. (Riviera did a wonderful job too)
Sorrento, despite having been a tourist centre for centuries, is a fascinating small city with a wealth of good restaurants and interesting shops.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.

We usually travel independently, but not wanting to drive in Italy, we booked with Riviera Travel with inclusive tours and were not disappointed. There were other more modern 4* hotels to choose from, but, having spoken with some staying in those hotels when on trips out, we believe we made the right choice. La Badia was a monastery until 50 years ago and so has a lot of character. We were in Room 1, tucked behind reception with a small terrace with views over the Bay to Vesuvius. Set in its own extensive grounds, it was wonderfully quiet at all times.
Our room was kept spotlessly clean and we were very happy with it. Being a small hotel the service was personal. On one occasion, after a day out, I got in the shower and the shower head came off and broke on the floor. The showers are powerful so not surprised. My husband went to reception and within minutes, the shower head was replaced with a new one.
There was a good choice at breakfast, we dont have a cooked breakfast so a lack of bacon and eggs did not bother us. Dinner was three courses with a choice of dishes and the lovely Gala Dinner had 4 courses and an accoustic guitarist singing. Lovely, not loud!!! A complimentary glass of champagne was also provided. Drinks were no more expensive than anywhere else and our unfinished bottles of wine were kept for another night, in the fridge if required. The Head Waiter, Antonio was a gem, but all the waiters were friendly and efficient. The views from the terrace restaurant were superb, the sunsets stunning.
The pool was wonderful after a day sight seeing and towels were provided.
The trips with Riviera, by the way were excellent and arrangements went like clockwork. We got to see so much of the area without the stress of driving.
All in all we came home very happy that we had an excellent holiday and would certainly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Worth paying for upgrade to sea view. Request terrace.

Not much to add from what has been said by other reviewers... My only comments are not really about the hotel but worth knowing if you stay there:
1. If you dont walk too well the walk into town (downhill) is quite hard work and even harder coming back (uphill). The hotel's location does mean that you will have to take a bus or arrange a taxi.
2. If you take a taxi get the hotel to organise it. They are much cheaper than the ones in Sorrento.
3. The hotel gave us information about a community bus which runs between Priora and Piazza Tasso in Sorrento (1 Euro each way - see http://www.cooptasso.com/news/lineaurbana.php) but the Sita bus that operates on the Torca-S.Agata-Priora (via Nastro Verde)-Sorrento route is much more frequent (2.40 Euro each way, tickets from Tabacchi shops. See http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXIV.pdf)
3. There are two Room 34s! The one we had was excellent!
