We stayed for a week after selecting the hotel based on TA reviews.
We had stayed in Sorrento before (Il Nido) but wanted somewhere within walking distance of the town and station for this trip.
The hotel is exactly 10 minutes easy walk to the Station (I timed it) and a further 4 minutes to Piazza Tasso and I’m 60+ so it shouldn’t be a problem for most people.
The street to town is usually busy during the day and the paths (sidewalks) are very narrow in some parts, but that is usual in Italy. We didn’t find it a problem, but you would need to be careful if you have small children who were not used to such conditions. There are small shops to buy water/fruit etc. and quite a few bars and small restaurants along the main road towards town and there is a supermarket up a side road on the way to the station for buying food if you want to take your own on day trips out of Sorrento. (Pompeii apart, Herculaneum and especially Oplontis are not well served with refreshment options!)
Our room overlooked the swimming pool, with a view across the bay to Vesuvius that was mostly obscured by a tree immediately outside. The hotel is quite small and there are only a few rooms that have any sort of view across the bay, although since you won't spend that much time staring out of your bedroom window, it doesn’t really matter.
The room was not large, but perfectly adequate and very smart, clean and well maintained. The bathroom was well appointed but small with a good dual head shower. We didn’t have any issues with the room, the hard bed (very firm, but that’s what we like and are used to) or the cleaning.
Breakfasts were good with a variety of cereals, pastries, yoghurts, a fresh fruit dish every day and hot(ish) eggs and bacon. I didn’t like the coffee in the morning (far too strong for my taste) so I had tea which was provided via a pot of hot water and a good selection of tea bags. The only slight niggle was that fresh orange juice wasn’t available towards the end of the week, because the hotel was waiting for a delivery, but that is only a very minor gripe.
The staff were, without exception, very friendly and very helpful and were a credit to the hotel. An additional good resource was a touch screen information point in the lobby in either English, Italian, German or French. I would have liked to see more tourist brochures available without having to ask at reception.
We used two of the restaurants recommended by the hotel and generally found them to be better than the restaurants we visited in our previous visit to Sorrento, but our experiences with them were inconsistent (see reviews), however a really good point was that some of the restaurants offered a free shuttle service pick up and return to the hotel. We were a bit wary of that at first, but had one of our best experiences of a Sorrento restaurant that way (Da Filipo).
The pool, shared with the Hotel Central next door, was excellent and very welcome after a day sightseeing in the very hot temperatures we experienced in mid September. We could see from our room that the pool was cleaned daily after closing at 7pm. That was reassuring since we had suffered ear infections from hotel pools in the past.

I would definitely recommend the hotel and I felt that it easily exceeded its three star rating.

Room Tip: Best view would be from the third floor rooms 301 and 309

We stayed at the Hotel Gardenia in Sorrento for 3 nights. The Hotel was lovely, well located, beautiful swimming pool for those hot days, and a helpful, friendly staff. The rooms were clean, modern, very comfortable, and quiet. The staff were very friendly and offered great suggestions for restaurants and directions. The breakfasts were the best we enjoyed over our 22 day stay in Italy and France. The location was just a lovely stroll away from the train and bus station. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to our friends.

Very nice and helpful hosts! Clean, pool, great breakfasts!
but...uncomfortable beds, hard pillows, charge to use pool towels, not in the main area of town.

We decided to stay here after all the wonderful reviews. The staff was incredible, the room was very clean. The bed was the hardest bed I've ever slept in. The tile floor would have been better to sleep on. The pillows were like lead. They charged for a pool towel, which I thought was a bit ridiculous. It was approximately a 20 minute walk to the heart of Sorrento. I was with my family of 4.
